## Description

## A walk in Old Nikiti

Nikiti, at the entrance to Sithonia, began as a village set a little above the sea and only spread down to the beach from the 1950s. The old village, in the upper part, keeps its stone houses, narrow cobbled lanes and flower-filled yards, and makes the nicest walk in the area, especially in the late afternoon.

### A little history

The first settlement dates from the 14th century. The name comes from the "land of Neakitos", which by around 1300 was a metochi (estate) of the Athonite Xenofontos Monastery, and over time became "Nikiti". Its people took part in the Greek Revolution of 1821.

### What you will see

- The parish church of **Agios Nikitas**, built in 1867, and the square around it.
- Stone houses and mansions with wooden balconies, many of them restored.
- Views over the Toroneos Gulf from the higher points of the village.

### Nikiti honey

Nikiti is regarded as the centre of Greek beekeeping: its beekeepers' cooperative, founded in 1952, produces on average more than 900 tonnes of honey a year — about 10% of Greece's output. Local shops are a good place to buy some.

### Practical tips

Entry is free. Leave the car in the lower village and walk up — the lanes are narrow and steep, so wear comfortable shoes. Combine the walk with a swim at Nikiti beach and a meal at one of the village tavernas.
