## Description

Varkes Beach is a small cove just north of Afytos, on the east coast of Kassandra — the village centre is only 700 metres away. It takes its name from the local fishermen’s boats (varkes) traditionally moored here. It is roughly 75 km from Thessaloniki, making it one of the most accessible of Kassandra’s notable beaches.

The shore is golden sand, spread beneath the characteristic bluffs of Afytos, which give the cove a sheltered, enclosed feel. The seabed deepens gently — comfortable for children too — and the water is clean and usually calm.

Facilities are mixed: one section has sunbeds, umbrellas and beach bars for a drink or a quick bite, with showers and changing cabins, while a large stretch remains free for those who prefer their own towel.

Getting down is part of the charm: from Afytos you descend by steps and footpaths through the greenery — you leave the car up in the village. The walk down takes 5-10 minutes. With a pushchair or limited mobility it is awkward; in that case choose Afytos’ main beach instead.

In the morning the beach is quiet even in August; from midday it fills up, mostly with visitors staying in Afytos. September is ideal — the sea keeps its summer warmth and the crowds thin out.

The real bonus is the combination with the village itself: a swim at Varkes followed by dinner or sunset in stone-built Afytos, overlooking the Toroneos Gulf from the village balcony — one of the loveliest evening scenes in Halkidiki. Nearby alternatives: Afytos’ main beach, Kallithea 3.5 km south and Nea Fokaia 5.5 km north.
