# Halkidiki in August: The Peak Season Guide

> The peak of summer: heat, meltemi, full beaches and festivals — how to do it right.

August is the heart of summer in Halkidiki — the hottest, liveliest and busiest time. If you know what to expect and book ahead, it's a wonderful month for the sea, village festivals and endless evenings. Here's what to know.

## Weather & sea

Expect 30–34°C by day and warm nights around 22–24°C. The sea is at its warmest, about 26°C — bath-like. August often brings the **meltemi**, a cool north wind that eases the heat but kicks up waves on the open, east-facing coasts. On windy days, favour sheltered coves.

## Crowds & bookings

This is peak month: full accommodation, full beaches, full tavernas — especially around 15 August. **Book your stay early** (ideally months ahead) and reserve a table at popular fish tavernas the same day. Reach the beaches before 11:00 for a good spot.

## The 15 August festivals

On 15 August, the feast of the Virgin Mary, the villages come alive with [panigiria](https://chalkidikihub.gr/en/blog/halkidiki-panigiria-festivals): live music, dancing, grilled meat and wine until dawn. It's the month's most authentic experience. See more summer [festivals & events](https://chalkidikihub.gr/en/events), like the Afytos and Kassandra festivals.

## Where to go on windy days

When the north wind blows, the west and south coasts stay calmer. For quiet, shallow water with kids, see the [shallow-water beaches](https://chalkidikihub.gr/en/blog/best-beaches-shallow-water); to escape the crowds, the [quiet beaches](https://chalkidikihub.gr/en/blog/halkidiki-quiet-beaches).

## August nights

August is the month for sunset cocktails and music until late. Sarti's [beach bars](https://chalkidikihub.gr/en/blog/best-beach-bars-halkidiki) run at full tilt, while the [seaside fish tavernas](https://chalkidikihub.gr/en/blog/seaside-restaurants-halkidiki) are perfect for dinner by the water.

## Practical notes

- **Prices:** the highest of the season — budget accordingly or look at the start/end of the month.

- **Sun & water:** the sun is strong; avoid the beach 13:00–16:00.

- **Alternative:** if you'd prefer fewer people with the same sea, consider [when else to visit](https://chalkidikihub.gr/en/blog/best-time-to-visit-halkidiki) (June or September).
