# Halkidiki in October: the other Halkidiki, without tourists

> Swimming on warm days, hiking in Holomontas, chestnuts and tsipouro: what Halkidiki offers (and what it doesn’t) in October.

October is the month when Halkidiki sheds its summer skin and becomes a place — not a destination. It is not a month for classic beach holidays; however, it is ideal for a completely different journey: mountains, villages, monasteries, food, and, on good days, a final swim on empty beaches.

## Weather: two seasons in one month

The first ten days often hold 22-25°C with sunny days and sea temperatures around 20-22°C — swimming for those who do not want it lukewarm. From the middle of the month, the weather becomes more autumnal: 17-20°C, more rain, and the first cold nights. The three-day weekend of October 28th is traditionally the last “mini season” — the villages fill up with Thessalonians.

## What remains open

Here, honesty is needed: most seasonal accommodations, beach bars, and tourist shops gradually close within the first fifteen days. Open remain those that cater to locals — and that is where the profit lies. Nea Moudania, Polygyros, Nikiti (the upper village), Ierissos, and Arnaia live year-round, with taverns that in October cook for neighbors, not for tourists. Ouranoupoli keeps a rhythm thanks to the pilgrims of Mount Athos.

## Chalkidiki at its best

If August belongs to the beaches, October belongs to Holomontas. The forests around Taxiarchis and Varvara take on autumn colors, the first rains bring mushrooms, and chestnuts are roasted in the squares. Paleochora and Arnaia are the natural stops for food — grilled dishes, tsipouro, and a fireplace, the exact opposite of coastal Halkidiki.

## Mount Athos and culture without queues

Cruises around Mount Athos thin out but continue from Ouranoupoli on good days, and pilgrimages to the Athos peninsula happen year-round. The archaeological site of Olynthos, the Petralona cave, and the museums operate on winter hours — check times before you go — and you enjoy them without groups.

## Who October is for

For those who have seen Halkidiki in the summer and want to see its other face. For hikers, photographers, food lovers, and couples looking for tranquility. Not for families wanting guaranteed swimming and playgrounds in operation.

## Practical tips

- Book accommodation in a place that lives year-round (Nea Moudania, Nikiti, Arnaia, Ouranoupoli) — not in a purely tourist resort.

- Bring both summer and autumn clothes: you may swim at noon and want a jacket in the evening.

- Call ahead before going to a specific tavern or attraction — hours change abruptly throughout the month.

- The olives are harvested towards the end of the month — if you stay in a rural village, you will experience it firsthand.
