Afytos (also Athytos) is widely considered one of the most beautiful traditional villages in all of Halkidiki. Built amphitheatrically on a low cliff on the eastern coast of Kassandra, about 80 km from Thessaloniki, it looks out over the Toronaios Gulf toward Sithonia. It is a protected traditional settlement, which gives it a character entirely different from the busy, modern resorts of the rest of the peninsula — here time moves more slowly.
The historic core is a rare, well-preserved cluster of stone mansions from the 18th and 19th centuries, with Macedonian and island architectural elements, wooden bay windows, cobbled lanes and a lively central square around the church of Agios Dimitrios. Afytos has a distinctly artistic, romantic feel: small galleries, handmade-jewellery workshops and traditional cafés overlooking the sea make it a favourite for couples and travellers seeking authenticity rather than mass tourism.
Just below the settlement lie both organised and quieter shores, the best known being Ktima and Varkes, with clear turquoise water, sunbeds and beach bars. A signature feature of Afytos is the natural freshwater springs that flow out of the rock near the beach — a rare sight where fresh water meets the sea.
Today's village stands on the site of ancient Aphytis, one of the oldest and most important cities of Kassandra, with a long history of trade and worship since antiquity. It's worth walking to the small chapel at the cliff's edge and the Folklore Museum, while from the viewpoints the sunset over Sithonia is among the most spectacular in the region.
In the tavernas and mezedopoleia around the square you'll find fresh fish, local cheeses, olives and Halkidiki honey. The nightlife is gentler and more cultured than in the neighbouring resorts — music bars with good wine and cocktails and a view, without the intense pace of Kallithea.
Afytos is about an hour by car from Thessaloniki "Makedonia" Airport (SKG). A car is the most convenient option, as it makes exploring easy; there is also a KTEL bus connection. You can easily combine your visit with nearby Kallithea, Kriopigi and Polychrono.
Afytos suits couples, families and lovers of tradition who want beauty and calm with easy access to beaches. The ideal season is May to September; August, the busiest month, calls for early booking, while June and September offer a calmer experience.
