Agios Nikolaos is one of the oldest and largest traditional villages of Sithonia, built on a hill on the eastern side of the leg. It stands out for its authentic character and its large, shaded square with age-old plane trees.
It's a living village with roots, stone houses and a tradition of beekeeping and olive oil. The atmosphere is genuine and calm, away from the tourist intensity of the coastal resorts.
Very close is Ormos Panagias (~3 km), the small harbour from which Mount Athos cruises depart, along with beautiful shores such as Pyrgos and Trani Ammouda.
In the square's tavernas you'll enjoy traditional dishes, grills, local honey and wine under the plane trees — a cool escape on hot days.
It's about 1.5 hours by car from Thessaloniki. It's an ideal base for eastern Sithonia — Vourvourou, Nikiti and Ormos Panagias.
Ideal for those wanting an authentic village with the sea and Mount Athos cruises close by. Main season is May–September.
