Ierissos is the largest town of the Athos peninsula (the third leg) and one of its liveliest centres, with a population of around 2,000. It's famous for its huge sandy beach and its role as a gateway to Mount Athos from the eastern side.

Ierissos has the character of a lively town rather than a resort: a square, a market, schools, everyday life year-round. It has a long maritime tradition and is known for its wooden fishing boats. The modern town was rebuilt slightly further inland after the devastating 1932 Halkidiki earthquake.
Next to today's town lies the site of ancient Akanthos, an important colony with rich archaeological finds and an extensive necropolis — evidence of the area's ancient prosperity, and worth a visit.
The main beach (Dimotiki Plaz, Komitsa) stretches for kilometres with shallow water and organised sections. From Ierissos harbour, boats depart to the eastern coast of Mount Athos, both for pilgrims and for cruises viewing the monasteries from the sea.
It's about 1.5–2 hours by car from Thessaloniki. Very close by are Nea Roda (~4 km), Tripiti, Ouranoupoli and the island of Ammouliani — an area rich in options.
Ideal for families and travellers wanting an authentic atmosphere, a big beach and a base for Mount Athos. Best season is May–September, though its size keeps it lively off-peak too.
