The ancient Kassandreia was founded in 316 BC by the king of Macedonia Cassander, on the site of ancient Potidea, and took its name. It was one of the strongest cities of Macedonia. Today’s Kassandreia, formerly Valtas, is the commercial center of the area, with shops, services, a local market, and all the essentials for visitors to the nearby beaches. It is close to the archaeological sites of Potidea and ancient Mendi, famous in antiquity for its wine.
