Nea Potidaia sits at one of Halkidiki's most distinctive spots: right on the isthmus of Kassandra, where the first "leg" joins the rest of the peninsula. It is literally the gateway to Kassandra — everyone heading down to the first leg passes through here, while its position gives it sea on both sides.
Its landmark is the Potidaia Canal, a man-made channel cutting across the isthmus and linking the Thermaic and Toronaios gulfs. Thanks to it, Kassandra is essentially an "island". Beside the canal, sections of the Byzantine wall survive, and there is a modern marina for leisure boats.
On this same site stood ancient Potidaea, a colony of Corinth with a decisive role in antiquity — its siege is considered one of the triggers of the Peloponnesian War. The area thus holds layers of history from classical antiquity to Byzantium, unusual for a seaside destination.
Thanks to its position on the isthmus, Nea Potidaia has shores on both sides, offering options depending on the wind and time of day — a rare flexibility. The beaches are sandy with shallow water, suitable for families.
Around the marina and the canal you'll find fish tavernas, cafés and bars overlooking the boats — a lively setting ideal for an evening stroll and dinner by the water. The scene of moored sailboats gives it a distinctive "marina" atmosphere.
It's only about 65 km (around 1 hour) from Thessaloniki, making it one of the most easily reached areas of Halkidiki. Because of its position at the entrance to the peninsula, it's an excellent base for exploring all of Kassandra with short daily distances.
