Nea Roda is a quiet fishing village at the base of the Athos peninsula (Halkidiki's third "leg"), built on a sheltered bay. It's an ideal stop for those heading to Ouranoupoli and Mount Athos, offering an authentic, tranquil atmosphere away from the mass crowds of the other legs.
The area's great historical asset is the Xerxes Canal: in 480 BC the Persian king Xerxes ordered a channel dug across the Athos isthmus so his fleet could avoid the dangerous cape where an earlier Persian fleet had been destroyed. Traces of this monumental work still survive near Nea Roda — a rare piece of ancient history within today's landscape.
The shores around Nea Roda are shallow, calm and often less crowded than the resorts of the other legs — ideal for families with small children and for restful swimming. The water is clear and the pace relaxed.
As a fishing village, Nea Roda is famous for its ultra-fresh fish and seafood in the traditional tavernas by the little harbour, where you often eat exactly what the fishermen caught that morning. Life here is simple and genuine, its rhythm set by the sea.
From Nea Roda you're minutes from Ouranoupoli, the last secular village before Mount Athos. From there, cruises depart to view the Athonite monasteries from the sea — the only option for female visitors, who are not permitted to enter the monastic state.
Access is by car, about 2 hours from Thessaloniki airport. Nearby are also Ierissos and Ammouliani (the only inhabited island of Halkidiki), both worth a day trip.
