Olynthos is a quiet village in the interior of Halkidiki, known above all for the neighbouring ancient Olynthos — one of the most important archaeological sites in all of northern Greece.
The ancient city was the most powerful in Halkidiki and leader of the Chalcidian League, until it was destroyed by Philip II in 348 BC. The archaeological site is famous for its Hippodamian (grid) town plan and for the exceptionally well-preserved mosaic floors of its houses — a unique glimpse into daily life in the 4th century BC.
The modern village is small and rural, offering a calm, authentic atmosphere next to a top archaeological destination — an ideal combination for history lovers.
It's about 1 hour by car from Thessaloniki. The nearest beaches (Agios Mamas, Nea Moudania) are a few kilometres away, while Portaria and Kalyves Polygyrou are close by.
