Ouranoupoli is the last secular village before Mount Athos, at the tip of the Athos peninsula. It's at once a lively seaside destination and the main gateway to the monastic state, which gives it a completely distinctive character.

From Ouranoupoli harbour depart the ferries to Mount Athos (with a permit, for male pilgrims) as well as the cruises that view the monasteries from the sea — the only option for women.
The village's landmark is the Byzantine Prosphorion Tower (14th c.) by the sea — an impressive monument standing guard at the entrance to the village.
Its beaches are sandy with clear water, while opposite lie the Drenia, a cluster of small islands with exotic shallow waters, ideal for a day trip by boat.
It's about 2 hours by car from Thessaloniki. Nearby are Tripiti (departure point for Ammouliani), Nea Roda and Ierissos.
Ideal for couples, families and pilgrims wanting to combine sea, history and Mount Athos. Main season is May–September.
