Simantra is a small town in the municipality of Nea Propontida, built at the foot of Mount Lostritis at an altitude of about 175 metres. It is the largest community in the municipality after Nea Moudania.
Simantra was founded by refugees from Semendere (Simantra) in Cappadocia, who settled on a site then called Karkara; the new settlement took the name of their homeland. The church of the Twelve Apostles holds relics of the Five Martyrs, who are also linked with Cappadocian Simantra. About 2.5 km east of the village, traces have been found of a Roman settlement that belonged administratively to the Roman colony of Cassandreia.
Residents work mainly in trade and farming. Every year in late July there are events in memory of the lost homeland, and on Clean Monday a carnival parade fills the central square.
Nearby are Portaria and the modern village of Olynthos (about 7 km each) and Zografou. The beaches of Nea Moudania are about 11 km away.
