Toroni lies at the south-western tip of Sithonia and rarely combines two things: one of the largest sandy beaches of the second leg and a deep ancient history. It's ideal for those who want an endless stretch of sand without the resort crowds, in a wild, open landscape.
Here flourished ancient Torone, one of the most important cities of ancient Halkidiki, a naval and trading power. On the small Lekythos peninsula at the edge of the beach, ruins of the ancient acropolis and a later Byzantine fortress survive — a short climb there, overlooking the open sea, is a must.
Toroni Beach is long (over a kilometre), with fine sand and shallow water, partly organised. Right next to it is the famous Porto Koufo (~2.5 km), the largest natural harbour in Greece, while very close are Tristinika and Aretes — among the most beautiful shores in all of Sithonia.
In the tavernas along the beach you'll eat fresh fish and seafood by the water. The pace is relaxed and family-friendly, with a few bars for a calm drink by the sea — without the intensity of the big resorts.
Toroni is a fair way from Thessaloniki (~2 hours by car), at the southern tip of Sithonia. It's an ideal base for exploring the wild southern beaches, neighbouring Sykia (~6.5 km), Kalamitsi and the striking Porto Koufo.
It suits couples and families wanting a big sandy beach, history and calm away from the busy resorts. Best season is May–September; even in August the sheer size of the beach absorbs the crowds.
