Vrastama (historically also Vrasta) is a hill village in the municipality of Polygyros, built at the foot of Mount Cholomontas at an altitude of around 450–500 metres, about 11 km east of Polygyros. The smaller villages of Kelli and Plana belong to the same local community.
It is one of the oldest settlements in Halkidiki. The village is already mentioned in the life of Saint Euthymios the Younger (9th century), who lived as a hermit in a cave in the area that still survives. Its people took part in the Greek Revolution of 1821. The main church is dedicated to the Annunciation and was renovated in 1814.
Most of the village's land is planted with olive trees, and olive growing is the main occupation. A local speciality is tsipouro made from koumaro, the fruit of the strawberry tree that grows on the surrounding slopes.
Take a walk through the narrow lanes with their old houses and the old primary school, and a drive into the countryside dotted with small chapels. The main village festival is on 15 August.
Anyone who wants to see inland life away from the coastal resorts, and to combine Polygyros with the villages of Cholomontas. The road south runs down to Ormylia and on to the shores of the Toroneos Gulf.
