Boat trips in Halkidiki are not an "extra" activity. They are perhaps the only practical way to see the most beautiful beaches and islets that are inaccessible by land. There are four different categories, with varying costs and experiences. This guide breaks down what each one offers, where they depart from, and what is worth it for whom.
1. Diaporos Islets Cruise (from Sarti, Vourvourou, or Ormos Panagias)
This is the most popular excursion in Sithonia. Diaporos is the largest of a cluster of 9 small islands (Agios Isidoros, Prasonisi, Ampelos, Peleki, etc.) to the north of Sithonia. They are uninhabited, and the surrounding waters are among the clearest in Halkidiki — locally compared to the Caribbean, and rightly so.
Typical schedule:
- 10:00 departure from the small port (Sarti, Vourvourou, or Ormos Panagias)
- 3-4 swimming stops at different spots around the islands
- Lunch at a tavern on one of the islands (or on the boat, depending on the provider)
- 17:00-17:30 return
Cost: 30-45 euros for adults, 15-25 euros for children under 12. Lunch is usually included. Drinks are typically extra.
Types of boats: From large wooden boats (40-80 people, more of a "mass" experience) to small speedboats (8-12 people, more private and expensive). For couples and small groups, the small speedboats offer a significantly better experience — fewer people, access to spots that the larger boats cannot reach, flexibility in the schedule. Costs are correspondingly 60-90 euros per person for speedboats.
2. Mount Athos Cruise (from Ouranoupoli and Ierissos)
The only legal option for women (and men without a residence permit) to see the monasteries of Mount Athos. The boat sails along the western or eastern coast of the peninsula, maintaining a distance of 500 meters from the shore (as mandated by law). From that distance, the 7-8 largest monasteries are clearly visible: Dochiariou, Xenophontos, Panteleimonos (Russian, with characteristic green domes), Xyropotamou, Simonopetra (dramatic on a cliff).
From Ouranoupoli (western coast): 3-4 departures in summer, duration 3-4 hours, cost 25-35 euros for adults. It is the most well-known and busiest.
From Ierissos (eastern coast): fewer departures, duration 4-5 hours, cost 30-40 euros. You see different monasteries — M. Lavra, Karakallou, Philotheou, Stauropigou. Less touristy.
On board, there is usually an Orthodox guide who explains the history and significance of each monastery (in English and Greek).
3. Sunset Cruise & Sunset (from Neos Marmaras, Sarti, Porto Koufo)
A more "lifestyle" option. Smaller boats (sailing or speedboats), departure 18:00-19:00, duration 2-3 hours. The program: one swimming stop, then heading towards the sunset with drinks (ouzo, beer, Greek wine) and light snacks.
Cost: 35-55 euros per person for group trips, 250-450 euros total for a private boat for up to 8 people. From Porto Koufo specifically, the experience is unique because the sun sets over the open sea of Toroneos.
4. Private Boat for a Full Day
For groups of 4-10 people, renting a private boat with a captain for a full day is the most "premium" option. Available at the larger ports: Neos Marmaras, Sarti, Porto Carras, Ormos Panagias.
Cost depending on the type of boat:
- 30-foot speedboat (up to 6 people): 350-550 euros/day
- Larger 40-foot speedboat (up to 10 people): 700-1,000 euros/day
- Sailing catamaran (up to 12 people): 800-1,500 euros/day
- Luxury yachts: from 2,000 euros/day and up
Fuel is usually extra (50-150 euros depending on the distance). Captain included. Often a "hostess" is provided for serving.
The advantage: you decide the destination. You can combine Diaporos + hidden beaches of Sithonia + lunch at a tavern on your own schedule.
What to Consider Before Booking a Trip
- Weather: the meltemi (northern wind in July-August) can cancel trips. All serious providers cancel if the wind exceeds force 5. Check the forecast before booking on a critical day.
- Sun protection: 4-6 hours at sea is a lot of exposure. SPF 50, a hat, and a UV t-shirt (especially for children).
- Seasickness: on smaller boats with choppy waters. Take a pill (Dramamine, Nautamine) 30 minutes beforehand if you are sensitive.
- What to wear: a swimsuit underneath, a pair of sun sandals (not flip-flops, they slip), and a light t-shirt for when it gets breezy in the late afternoon.
- Snorkeling gear: most boats provide masks and fins, but they are used equipment. If you want something better, bring your own.
- Camera: a GoPro or other waterproof camera makes a difference. The sights you will see are worth the photos.
Where to Find Providers
At the small ports of Sarti, Vourvourou, Ormos Panagias, and Porto Koufo, there are stands with signs ("Boat trips today", "Cruises"). You can often buy a ticket the same day or the day before. For August, book 2-3 days in advance.
In Ouranoupoli and Ierissos, the Mount Athos cruises have organized offices at the front of the port.
For private boats, hiring is done via email/WhatsApp, and a deposit of 30-50% is required. Seasonal full payment is usually in cash on the day.
Recommendations by Visitor Type
- Families with small children: group cruise to Diaporos on a large boat, or a short sunset cruise.
- Couples: small speedboat to Diaporos, or sunset cruise on a sailing boat.
- Groups of 6-10 people: private boat for a full day — the cost per person drops to 80-150 euros and the experience is much superior.
- Women/groups wanting Mount Athos: cruise from Ouranoupoli or Ierissos — this is the only option.
- Snorkeling enthusiasts: private boat to Diaporos, with stops at your chosen spots.
