Halkidiki has significantly improved its electric vehicle charging infrastructure over the past 3 years, but it still lags behind saturated areas like Attica or the greater Thessaloniki region. If you plan to visit Halkidiki with an electric vehicle, this guide provides you with the real picture: where chargers are located, their power, which network to use, and practical tips to avoid waiting times and range anxiety.
The Overall Picture
As of May 2026, the total number of charging points in Halkidiki is approximately 60-70 — a figure that has more than doubled since 2024. Of these, around 15 are fast chargers (DC, 50kW and above) and the rest are AC (7-22kW). Coverage is denser in the main coastal areas and larger villages, and almost non-existent in the remote slopes of southern Sithonia.
Main Networks Operating in Halkidiki
- Protergia Charge: the largest network in Northern Greece. Good coverage in hotels, supermarkets, and main roads.
- NRG Charge / NRG by Public Power: several points in shopping centers and Praktiker / Sklavenitis.
- EKO Mobility: at some EKO gas stations along National Road 16 (Thessaloniki-Polygyros).
- Shell Recharge / Tesla Supercharger: Tesla supercharger at Thessaloniki Mediterranean Cosmos (can also charge other EVs with CCS). There is currently no supercharger in Halkidiki.
- Local providers in hotels/accommodations: an increasing number of hotels offer charging points for guests, usually 7-22kW AC.
All of the above are connected through simple apps like PlugShare, ABRP (A Better Routeplanner), or the direct apps of each network.
Main Points by Area
Nea Moudania and Entrance to Halkidiki
The "gateway" to Halkidiki is the best-covered area. There are 3-4 DC fast chargers, plus Hyperchargers 150kW+:
- EKO Hyperchargers at a gas station on the highway, a few kilometers before Nea Moudania (up to 150kW)
- Protergia Charge at Praktiker shopping center Nea Moudania (50kW)
- NRG Charge at Cosmos Galaxy (50kW)
These are ideal for charging before continuing deeper into Halkidiki, or for charging at the end of your vacation before returning to Thessaloniki.
Kassandra
- Kallithea: 2-3 AC 22kW points in hotels (Pomegranate, Athos Palace, and others), 1 DC 50kW fast charger in the center in a new parking lot
- Chanioti: 2 AC points in hotel units
- Sani Resort: private charging points for guests
- Pefkochori, Paliouri: 1-2 AC chargers per village in hotels
Sithonia
- Nikiti: 1 DC 50kW fast charger (Protergia), 2 AC
- Neos Marmaras: 2-3 AC in hotels, private points at Porto Carras
- Vourvourou, Sarti: 1-2 AC points in hotels per village
- Southern Sithonia (Sykia, Kalamitsi, Porto Koufo): almost nothing. Charge before you arrive.
Athos Side (Athos, Ierissos, Ouranoupoli)
- Ierissos: 1 AC charger
- Ouranoupoli: 1-2 AC in hotels
- Stratoni, Olympiada, Stageira: limited coverage — 0-1 points
Mountain Interior (Polygyros, Arnaia)
- Polygyros: 2 AC points in the center, 1 DC 50kW at the city exit
- Arnaia: 1 AC charger in the center
Practical Tips for Charging
Payment and Initialization
Almost all public chargers require the use of an app or the provider's RFID card. Some newer ones also accept Tap-to-charge with a credit card, but this is not widespread yet. Practical recommendation:
- Download Protergia Charge and NRG Charge apps before you arrive
- Register a payment card in the apps
- If you don't want to download 5 apps, use a roaming app like Plugsurfing or Shell Recharge that work across various networks
Prices 2026
- AC charging (up to 22kW): 0.45-0.60 euros/kWh
- DC charging (50kW): 0.55-0.75 euros/kWh
- DC ultra-fast (150kW+): 0.65-0.85 euros/kWh
- In some hotels, free for guests, or at a discounted price
For comparison: a full charge of a 60kWh battery costs 30-45 euros. With a consumption of 15kWh/100km, this corresponds to ~400 km. Cheaper than gasoline (which for the same distance would cost 50-65 euros).
Strategy for 5-7 Day Vacations
If you stay in one place (e.g., Sarti or Kallithea) and make trips within a radius of 30-50 km, a medium battery (60kWh) allows you not to charge at all outside your base. You can cover 5-7 days with one full charge upon arrival and one before departure.
If you plan to combine areas (e.g., 3 days in Kassandra + 3 days in Sithonia), aim for a hotel that has a charging point — this way you avoid public chargers that may be occupied.
Potential Problems and How to Avoid Them
- Charger offline: a more common problem. Always check the app before you arrive to see if it shows "available". If it doesn’t, have an alternative.
- Charger occupied: during peak season (July-August), the only DC chargers in small villages may have a queue. Check ABRP for real-time status.
- Incorrect plug type: the EU has converged on CCS for DC and Type 2 for AC. However, older Teslas with Type 1, or cars with CHAdeMO (some Nissan Leaf), may have limited options.
Charging on the Route Thessaloniki-Halkidiki
National Road 16 and the new Thessaloniki-Nea Moudania Highway have 2-3 fast charging stations along the way. If you arrive from the airport with an electric rental that is not fully charged, you can stop halfway for 20 minutes to ensure you comfortably reach your destination.
Recommendation for Renting an Electric Vehicle in Halkidiki
From SKG airport, there are several EVs available from rental chains (Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, MG4, BYD). Prices are 10-25% higher than gasoline vehicles of the same category. Make sure the rental comes with a Type 2 cable for AC charging at hotels.
If you are unsure about the availability of chargers at your destination, ask the hotel for written confirmation before booking. In some hotels, it is "first-come-first-served" so there is no guarantee.
