Mount Athos is one of Europe's last genuinely different travel experiences: an autonomous monastic republic, a thousand years old, entered only with a special permit — the diamonitirion. The path to it confuses many first-timers, but it's manageable once you know the steps. We explain them in order: the application, the pickup, the ferry, the rules — and the boat alternative for those who don't get a permit.
What is the accommodation permit
The accommodation permit is the official entry license to the Mount Athos peninsula. Without it, disembarkation is not allowed. It is issued by the Pilgrims' Office and checked in Dafni (the port) and in Karyes.
Capacity limit: only 100 Orthodox and 10 non-Orthodox visitors per day. Therefore, early booking is required.
Step 1: Booking a spot (1-6 months in advance)
Contact the Pilgrims' Office of Mount Athos in Thessaloniki:
- Phone: +30 2310 252578
- Email via the official website
You will need:
- Full passport/ID details
- Desired entry date
- Religious affiliation statement (Orthodox or non-Orthodox — this affects available spots)
Recommendation: For summer or major holidays (Easter, Assumption), book 3-6 months in advance. For low season, 1 month is sufficient.
Step 2: Confirmation and preparation
Once your booking is approved, you will receive confirmation. At the same time:
- Contact the monasteries you wish to visit for overnight stays — each monastery has its own office and must be notified in advance (no spontaneous appearances).
- Plan your route — the monasteries are hours apart by hiking or vehicle.
Step 3: Picking up the accommodation permit (entry day)
On the day of your visit:
- Go to the Pilgrims' Office in Ouranoupoli (near the port), early in the morning
- Present your passport/ID and booking confirmation
- Pay the fee: 30 euros (Orthodox), 35 euros (non-Orthodox)
- You will receive the accommodation permit (a document in Byzantine style)
Step 4: The ferry
The official ferry "Agios Panteleimon" departs from Ouranoupoli at 9:45 AM. Duration is 1 hour 50 minutes to Dafni (the main port). Ticket ~8-10 euros.
In Dafni, the accommodation permit is checked. From there, buses to Karyes (administrative center) and small boats to the more remote monasteries.
Duration and extension
The basic accommodation permit is valid for 4 days / 3 nights. Extensions can be requested at the Holy Epistasia in Karyes, provided there is a reason.
What to bring
- Cash: There are NO ATMs inside. The monasteries do not accept cards.
- Hiking shoes: Many routes are done on foot
- Long clothing: Long pants, long sleeves. No shorts/tank tops.
- Personal items: Soap, towel, toothbrush (the monasteries provide the basics)
- Flashlight: Useful for night services
- ID/passport
Behavioral rules
- Photography: Allowed outside, NOT inside the churches or during services. No photos of monks without permission.
- Monastery schedule: Wake-up before sunrise, services 04:00-08:00, meals at 09:30 and 16:00. Respect this.
- Silence: During services and in the cells.
- Hospitality: Free (bed in a dormitory + meals). Tipping is customary, not mandatory.
Age limits
Men 18+. Minors only with a father/relative's accompaniment and special permission.
For women: the alternative
Women's entry is prohibited. The only option is a viewing cruise from Ouranoupoli or Ierissos — the boats sail 500m from the shore, offering views of the monasteries. Duration 3-5 hours, cost 25-40 euros. No accommodation permit is required.
Best time to visit
May and September: Mild weather, avoiding the heat of August (most monasteries do not have air conditioning) and the winter rains.
Conclusion
The process of obtaining the accommodation permit may seem complicated but is simple if started early: booking 1-6 months in advance, pickup in Ouranoupoli, ferry at 9:45. It is a spiritual experience of 1,000+ years that few places in the world can offer. Start planning early and you will be rewarded.
Practical notes for international visitors
The process is the same wherever you're travelling from: apply to the Pilgrims' Bureau in Thessaloniki by email with a passport copy, ideally several months ahead — the ten daily places for non-Orthodox visitors go fast, especially around Easter and in summer. Entry is for men only; women and families experience Athos from the sea instead.
Plan to spend the night before in Ouranoupoli (2 hours from SKG airport) as the ferry from the Athos quay leaves early. For everyone who can't or doesn't want to go ashore, the boat cruises from Ormos Panagias or Ouranoupoli show the monasteries from the water — no permit, all welcome.
