Nea Moudania is the first large village-almost-town you encounter coming from Thessaloniki towards Halkidiki. With about 9,500 permanent residents, it is the largest coastal town in the region, serving as the "gateway" to the area — here you will find the largest shopping center, most supermarkets, and most administrative services. It is not a classic holiday destination in the narrow sense, but it has its own identity and several advantages for those who use it as a base.
Location and How to Get There
Nea Moudania is located 65 kilometers southeast of Thessaloniki, at the beginning of Kassandra. The drive is the shortest from all destinations in Halkidiki: 50-55 minutes via the new National Road. From SKG airport, it takes approximately 55-65 minutes (60 km).
With KTEL Halkidiki, there are buses every 30 minutes to and from Thessaloniki in the summer, taking 50 minutes and costing 8 euros. More frequent than any other destination in Halkidiki.
Brief History of the Settlement
The modern town was founded after 1922, when refugees from the Moudania of Asia Minor (near Bursa) settled here after the Asia Minor Catastrophe. This is where the name comes from — "Nea" Moudania, in memory of their homeland. Before its establishment, the area was sparsely populated, with some small agricultural centers.
The ancient Potidaea was located a few kilometers to the south, at the site of the Kassandra canal — thus there is archaeological interest in the surrounding area. However, the modern town itself has 20th-century architecture, without any particular tourist-historical character.
Beaches
The central beach of Nea Moudania is the longest continuous beach in Halkidiki — stretching for 3.5 kilometers from the port to Nea Flogita. It is sandy with a shallow bottom. Not the most picturesque (the urban environment is visible behind), but extremely practical: you can walk from your hotel to the beach in 2 minutes, have coffee afterwards at a café on the pedestrian street, and dine in a tavern by the waterfront in the evening.
Closer beaches with a more "holiday" character are less than 20 minutes' drive away: Nea Potidaea (immediately to the south), Sani (12 km south), Portes, and Nea Fokea.
What Makes It Convenient as a Base
Nea Moudania has the full infrastructure of a small town that most coastal villages lack:
- 3 large supermarkets (AB Vassilopoulos, Sklavenitis, Lidl)
- Halkidiki Hospital on call 24/7 (Polygyros is only 25 km away, but there is also a Health Center in Nea Moudania)
- 5+ pharmacies, of which at least 1 is open overnight
- 24-hour gas stations at the main exit junctions
- Banks and ATMs of all major banks (Piraeus, Eurobank, Alpha, National)
- Many souvlakeries, cafés, ice cream shops that operate year-round, not just seasonally
- Cosmos Galaxy: a small shopping center with chains (Public, Sportshops, fashion sub-centers)
- Good 4G/5G coverage and reliable ATMs everywhere
This practicality makes Nea Moudania a good choice for: families with babies (close to the hospital, diapers/food available everywhere), people who need services (doctor, dentist, bank during vacations), and those who will take day trips to different areas of Halkidiki (its location is central).
Activities
- Port and fishing spot: in the evening it is a lively place. Many fish taverns, boats docked, good atmosphere for an evening stroll.
- Waterland (Liti — a few kilometers from Thessaloniki, on the way to Nea Moudania): the largest water park in Northern Greece. Ticket prices are 25-30 euros for adults, 18-22 for children.
- Potidaea Canal: an impressive water canal that separates Kassandra from the rest of the peninsula. It is crossed by a small bridge, and there is a viewpoint at the eastern end.
- Archaeological remains of Potidaea: a few visible remnants of the ancient city's wall, with signage. Not particularly impressive but of historical interest.
- Bowling-Cinema Cosmos Galaxy: for when the kids get tired of the beach.
Food
At the port of Nea Moudania, there are several traditional fish taverns with a local clientele — meaning residents of the town who go for Sunday meals. This clientele keeps the quality high. The fish comes directly from the boats in the port.
In addition to fish taverns, the town has several souvlakeries, a few notable meat taverns, and decent Italian cuisine (regular pizzerias with wood ovens, not just "touristy").
Prices are normal: in a good fish tavern, a table for 2 with a fish dish, appetizers, and wine costs 45-65 euros. In a souvlakerie, a meal costs 8-12 euros per person.
Accommodation
Nea Moudania has several small and medium-sized hotels (mainly 2-3 stars), and many rental apartments. They do not have the "luxury beach resorts" like Kallithea or Sani, but prices are correspondingly lower.
Indicative prices for a 4-person apartment:
- June / September: 65-100 euros/night
- July: 90-130 euros
- August: 120-180 euros
For the same budget, you get a lower "holiday" feel than Kallithea or Sithonia, but greater practicality.
Who It’s a Good Choice For
- Families with small children: all the infrastructure is nearby, in case you need anything
- Those who will take day trips: from Nea Moudania, it is centrally located to visit different places — Kassandra 30-60 minutes, Sithonia 50-80 minutes, Athos-side 70-90 minutes
- Visitors with short vacations of 2-3 days: due to its proximity to Thessaloniki
- Business trips: it is the only destination in Halkidiki with a regular business infrastructure
Who It’s Not Ideal For
- Those who want a "Greek island" feel — the town is functional, not picturesque
- Those who want the most beautiful beaches — the central beach is okay but not among the top, so you need a car to reach the best ones
- Those who want peace and quiet — it is a lively town, with relative traffic
Practical Information
- Parking: easier than in coastal villages, there are several free parking areas in pedestrian zones
- Wolt/efood delivery: available here — one of the few areas in Halkidiki with regular service
- Health centers: 24/7 Health Center on call, and General Hospital of Halkidiki 25 km away (Polygyros)
- Suitable even in winter: unlike 90% of Halkidiki, here you will find operational shops and taverns all year round
