Neos Marmaras is the largest and most bustling village in Sithonia — the "capital" of the second peninsula. With around 3,000 permanent residents and a capacity of over 25,000 people in the summer, it is the point where most of Sithonia's tourist infrastructure is concentrated — hotels of all categories, cafes, tavernas, bars, a marina, and supermarkets. Next to it is Porto Carras, the largest tourist complex in Northern Greece. This guide explains what makes Neos Marmaras a good choice for a base, which beaches are worth visiting, and what else is available in the area.
Location and How to Get There
On the western coast of Sithonia, 125 kilometers from Thessaloniki, with a driving time of 2 hours without traffic. From SKG airport, it takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes (130 km).
With the Halkidiki KTEL, there are 4-5 daily routes in the summer, lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes, costing 16 euros. One of the most reliable connections.
From Kallithea or Hanioti (Kassandra), there is no direct connection — you need to return towards Nea Moudania and then head back towards Sithonia.
Brief History and Character
Modern Neos Marmaras was founded in 1922 by refugees from the Asia Minor Catastrophe, who came from the island of Marmara (a large island in the Sea of Marmara, near Istanbul). This is where the name comes from. Before their settlement, the area was sparsely populated, with small livestock communities.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the establishment of Porto Carras (by shipowner Giannis Carras) transformed the area into an important tourist destination. The complex was developed on 1,700 acres, featuring hotels, a casino, a marina, a golf course, and one of Greece's most significant wineries.
The 3 Distinct Parts of Neos Marmaras
The Old Village (above the road)
On the hillside above the main beach, the traditional village is preserved with narrow cobblestone streets, stone houses, and the central square with plane trees. Less touristy, with local clientele in tavernas and cafes. From there, you have a panoramic view of the Singitic Gulf.
The Waterfront and Marina
The main tourist zone. A pedestrian street 1.5 km long with dozens of cafes, restaurants, and beach bars. The marina has a capacity of over 100 boats and is one of the most beautiful in Northern Greece. From here, cruises, speedboats, and private vessels depart.
Porto Carras
4 kilometers south of the village. An autonomous tourist complex with:
- 2 large 5-star hotels (Sithonia Beach, Meliton)
- Casino Porto Carras
- 18 holes golf course — one of the most renowned in Greece
- Marina with 315 berths
- Domaine Porto Carras winery (open for visits)
- 2 private beaches (Vergina, Sithonia)
- Spa, restaurants, conference center
You can visit the complex for a meal, to tour the winery, or to go to the casino without being a hotel guest.
Beaches
- Neos Marmaras Beach (central): sandy, organized, a walk from everything. Not the most impressive but practical.
- Lagomandra: 2 km south. A large sandy beach with pine trees. Blue Flag.
- Porto Carras beaches (Sithonia, Vergina): private but accessible for a fee, high quality of water and services.
- Paradise: 4 km south, a small hidden cove.
- Karydi Vourvourou: 25 km east, the most famous beach in Sithonia. Day trip.
- Further beaches: from Neos Marmaras, you can reach Kalamitsi, Porto Koufo, Toroni in 30-50 minutes.
Food
Neos Marmaras has the largest variety of restaurants in Sithonia:
- Traditional tavernas: in the old village and the more "local" areas
- Fish tavernas: on the waterfront and in the marina, with fresh fish of the day
- Italian: several pizzerias with wood-fired ovens, some proper Italian restaurants
- "Fusion" and international cuisine: a few but reliable restaurants for those seeking alternatives
- Fast food: many souvlakeries, creperies, and ice cream shops on the waterfront
Prices are typical for tourist Halkidiki: 35-60 euros for a table for 2 in a taverna, 60-100 in a good restaurant, 100-200 in the fine dining options at Porto Carras.
Nightlife
Neos Marmaras has the liveliest nightlife in Sithonia — although it is clearly calmer than Hanioti or Kallithea in Kassandra. On the waterfront, beach bars, lounge bars, and 2-3 clubs operate late into the night. The casino at Porto Carras is also an option for those wanting a "night out".
Compared to Sarti (quieter) and Hanioti (more intense party scene), Neos Marmaras is in the "middle" — enough activity without excess.
Accommodation
Practically every category:
- Budget studios and apartments: 50-100 euros/night in June/September
- 3-4* hotels: 100-180 in normal season, 160-260 in peak
- 5* Porto Carras: from 250-300 euros/night in low season, up to 600+ in peak
- Villas with pools: 250-500 euros/night depending on size and season
Activities Beyond the Beach
- Diaporos Cruise: daily boats depart from the marina. 4-5 hours, 30-45 euros per person.
- Sunset cruise: 2-3 hour evening trips with drinks and snacks.
- Kayaking, SUP, jet ski: rentals from the marina and Lagomandra.
- Porto Carras Golf: 18 holes course, international standards. Green fee around 80-120 euros.
- Visit to Porto Carras Winery: tour and tasting, 20-35 euros per person. My recommendation: it's really worth it.
- Cycling: bike path within Porto Carras, bike rentals in the village.
- Day trip to Parthenon (7 km): a mountain village with panoramic views.
- Day trip to Vourvourou: 25 km east.
Who It's a Good Choice For
- First-time visitors to Sithonia: from the base of Neos Marmaras, you can explore all of Sithonia on day trips
- Families: complete infrastructure, many activities
- Couples: variety of options, nice waterfront
- Those wanting "luxury" but close to the village: Porto Carras
- Those needing professional infrastructure: Porto Carras conference center
Who It's Not Ideal For
- Those wanting absolute peace: it is significantly more "lively" than, for example, Sarti or Kalamitsi
- Those looking for a "pristine" experience: the waterfront is heavily touristic
- Those wanting the most beautiful beach: the central one is OK — the best are elsewhere
