Gomati is a small village in northeastern Halkidiki, located between Ierissos and Stratoni. With only about 300 residents, it is one of the quietest and least exploited villages in the area — which makes it perfect for those looking for the authentic side of Halkidiki away from any tourist noise. It is a bit inland, without its own beach, but with access to several good beaches nearby.
Where it is located and how to get there
In northeastern Halkidiki, 6 km southwest of Ierissos, at an altitude of 200m. It is 100 kilometers (1 hour 35 minutes drive) from Thessaloniki. From Ierissos, it is just a 10-minute drive via a narrow provincial road.
There is no regular KTEL connection — a car is essential.
A bit of history
Gomati gets its name from the Byzantine word "gomos" (cargo) — the area was historically used as a loading point for minerals from the Stratoni mines to the coast. In more recent centuries, it was an agricultural community focused on viticulture and livestock farming.
Today, it remains almost unchanged. Few visitors pass through here, which helps maintain its authenticity.
What you will find
Gomati is one of those villages that offers nothing "touristy." What exists:
- Traditional architecture: stone and mud-brick houses, small cobblestone streets
- Central square with plane trees and a fountain
- Byzantine church with frescoes
- Traditional café: a gathering spot for locals
- Panoramic view of the Singitic Gulf and Mount Athos from the edges of the village
- Countless forest trails around for hiking
Beaches nearby
Gomati does not have its own beach, but it is 10-15 minutes away from:
- Ierissos: 6 km, large organized beach 8 km
- Stratoni: 10 km south, sandy beach
- Nea Roda: 12 km north
- Amouliani beaches: 15 km + 10-minute ferry
Food
In Gomati, there is usually 1 tavern (which may not operate year-round) and 1-2 traditional cafés. More serious dining options can be found in Ierissos (6 km) — which has notable fish taverns.
If you arrive in Gomati, ask the locals for local wine and tsipouro — the area has a winemaking tradition, and families maintain their own small wineries.
Accommodation
Practically nonexistent. A few Airbnb-style rentals. For a vacation base, Ierissos is a better option as it has full infrastructure and is just 6 km away.
