Kallithea sits on the east coast of Kassandra, above the Toroneos Gulf. It's one of Halkidiki's liveliest resorts, with a large organised beach, plenty of places to stay and the best-known nightlife on the peninsula.
Getting there
From central Thessaloniki it's about 87 km, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes without traffic, and a little less from the airport. The road runs via Nea Moudania and across the Potidea canal. KTEL Halkidiki buses also run from Thessaloniki. Timetables change with the season, so check them before you travel.
The beach
Kallithea's beach is sandy and largely organised, with sunbeds, beach bars and water sports. It gets busy in summer, so for a quieter swim go early in the morning or try one of the neighbouring beaches.
Beaches nearby
- Afytos: about 3 km north. A stone-built village on the cliff, with a beach below.
- Kriopigi and Polychrono: further south on the same coast, with long sandy beaches and pines.
- Siviri: on the west coast, about 10 minutes by car, where the sea faces the sunset.
- Possidi: about 20 km away, with its distinctive sand spit and lighthouse.
What to see
Next to the beach are the remains of the sanctuary of Zeus Ammon, one of the few ancient sites on Kassandra that sits right inside a resort. Afytos, with its stone houses and views over the gulf, is worth an evening stroll.
Nightlife
Kallithea is the centre of Kassandra's nightlife, with bars and clubs that stay open late in summer. If you want peace and quiet, stay a little outside the centre or in a neighbouring village.
Practical tips
- The best time to visit is June to September. In August, book your accommodation early.
- Most of what you need in Kallithea is within walking distance, but a car makes it much easier to explore Kassandra's beaches.
