Kassandra (officially Kassandra) is the administrative center of Kassandra — the only "proper" town on the first leg of Halkidiki. With around 1,500 permanent residents, it is not a coastal village but a town located inland on the peninsula, at an altitude of 80m. It serves as the commercial and administrative center for all of Kassandra, where you can find banks, a courthouse, a healthcare facility, local markets, and the municipality's headquarters.
Where it is located and how to get there
In the interior of Kassandra, 4-5 km from the northwestern coast, between the two sides of the peninsula. It is 90 kilometers (1 hour 20 minutes drive) from Thessaloniki.
There are frequent bus services from KTEL Halkidiki daily due to its importance as a center.
A bit of history
The name comes from the ancient city of Kassandra, founded by Alexander the Great's successor Cassander in 316 BC. The ancient Kassandra was located at the site of modern Potidea (at the entrance of the peninsula), not in modern Kassandra. The modern town inherited its name as an administrative legacy.
In more recent times, Kassandra was the administrative center during the Ottoman period and has maintained this role in modern Greece.
What you will find
It is not a tourist destination in the usual sense. There are no beaches, impressive sights, or a vibrant tourist scene. It is a town with:
- Central square with plane trees and cafes
- Churches: Saint Nicholas and others, of traditional architecture
- Local market on Mondays: one of the largest in Kassandra
- Traditional cafes and tavernas with authentic cuisine
- Public buildings: town hall, schools, health center
- Shops: clothing, electronics, household items
Food
Kassandra has a decent gastronomic scene — not touristy, but a "real" community. The tavernas operate year-round and have a local clientele. Specialties include:
- Traditional cooked dishes: goat in the pot, lemony kid
- Grilled meats: souvlaki, kokoretsi, ribs
- Halkidiki olives and local oil
- Fresh fish from the surrounding coastal areas
Prices are low: 25-40 euros for a table for 2.
Accommodation
Almost no official tourist infrastructure. 1-2 small accommodations mainly for business purposes. It is rare to stay overnight in Kassandra as a tourist — most visit for practical services and return to the coastal areas.
