Nea Roda is a coastal village in northeastern Halkidiki, located between Ierissos and Ouranoupoli. With around 700 permanent residents, it is one of the most "authentic" seaside villages in the region — it maintains a strong fishing tradition and a genuine local life beyond the tourist season. It was named after Rhodes in Asia Minor, from where most of the refugees who settled here after 1922 came.
Location and How to Get There
On the northeastern coast of Halkidiki, 5 km south of Ierissos and 7 km north of Ouranoupoli. It is 120 kilometers (2 hours drive) from Thessaloniki.
You can reach Ierissos or Ouranoupoli by KTEL and continue by taxi (5-7 euros). Some routes stop directly in Nea Roda.
A Bit of History
Nea Roda was founded in 1922 by refugees from Rhodes — but not from the modern Greek island. It refers to Rhodes in Asia Minor (New Ephesus), an ancient Greek city on the shores of Ionia. With the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the inhabitants were forced to leave their homeland and settled here, on the western side of the Ierissos bay.
They still bring with them:
- Traditional fishing techniques
- Specific seafood preparations (different from typical Halkidiki cuisine)
- Traditional songs and dances
- Strong religious traditions (major celebration on August 23 for the Virgin Mary)
The Beach
Nea Roda has a fairly long sandy beach (about 3 km in total length) with a Blue Flag in most years. It is partially organized, with several sections free and wild. Pine trees at the back provide natural shade.
Compared to the more "touristy" beaches like those in Ierissos or Ouranoupoli, here you will find significantly fewer people and a more "local" character.
Nearby beaches:
- Ierissos Central: 5 km north — larger and more organized
- Ouranoupoli Central: 7 km south — with Blue Flag
- Dragoudeli: 10 km south — excellent
- Amouliani: 10 km south + 10 minutes by ferry
Food
Nea Roda is one of the best places for fish in eastern Halkidiki. Due to its vibrant fishing tradition, the tavernas along the waterfront serve fresh fish straight from local boats. Specialties include:
- Fish of the day: clear, grilled or baked — Nea Roda has a solid reputation for this
- Mussels from nearby mussel farms
- Sardines and anchovies fried
- Grilled octopus from the rocky shores
- Traditional Asia Minor recipes — different from typical Halkidiki cuisine
Prices are moderate, sometimes lower than in Ierissos or Ouranoupoli: 30-50 euros for a table for 2.
Accommodation
There are a few small and medium hotels and several rentals. There are no large resorts. Options include:
- Studios: 45-80 euros/night in June/September, 70-120 during peak
- 4-person apartments: 75-120 in normal, 110-180 in peak
- 3* hotel: 80-130 in normal, 130-200 in peak
Good value for money. Usually 15-25% cheaper than Ouranoupoli for the same categories.
