Olympiada is one of the most picturesque and underdeveloped villages in Halkidiki. It is located on the northeastern coast of the region, in a small bay in front of a small islet (Kapri). It was named after Olympiada, the mother of Alexander the Great, who according to mythology was born or lived in the nearby Stageira — the homeland of Aristotle. With around 600 permanent residents, Olympiada retains its authentic fishing village character despite having developed as a tourist destination.
Where it is and how to get there
In northeastern Halkidiki, 105 kilometers from Thessaloniki (1 hour 40 minutes by car). The route passes through Stavros, or alternatively through Arnaia and Stratoni.
By KTEL, there are 2-3 daily routes during the summer. A car is helpful for visits around (Ierissos, Stageira).
Stageira and Aristotle
Next to Olympiada is the ancient city of Stageira, the birthplace of Aristotle (born there in 384 BC). The city was an important center of Halkidiki during the classical period and maintained commercial significance until its destruction by Philip II in 348 BC — along with Olynthos and other cities of Halkidiki.
Today, visitors can see:
- Archaeological site of Stageira: remains of the ancient acropolis, marketplace, and sections of the wall
- Aristotle's Grove: a modern monument-park dedicated to the philosopher, featuring educational experimental models (representations of the natural laws studied by Aristotle). Great for kids.
- Modern monument of Aristotle: a statue in the center of Stratoni
Entrance to the archaeological site: 4 euros. Aristotle's Grove: 3 euros. Total visit duration: 2-3 hours.
The beach
The main beach of Olympiada is small, sandy, located in the bay in front of the village. It may not be the most impressive in Halkidiki, but it has a unique feature: in front of it lies the small island of Kapri, which gives the view an "island-like" scenery.
Better nearby beaches:
- Kambos: 2 km south, a large sandy beach with pines
- Kalamiitsi (Stratoni): 5 km south, small and quiet
- Stratoni: 12 km south, a coastal village
- Kapri islets with small boats: for swimming in hidden coves
Food
Olympiada is probably the best spot for mussels in eastern Halkidiki. The bay is ideal for mussel farming, and several restaurants along the waterfront specialize in mussels prepared in various ways:
- Steamed mussels with local wine
- Saganaki with tomato and feta
- Fried in batter
- Mussel pilaf
- Raw mussels with lemon
Portion 250-400g: 12-18 euros. Besides mussels, there are also several traditional fish taverns with other seafood. Prices are affordable: 35-50 euros for a table for 2.
Accommodation
Olympiada has several small accommodations, 2-3* hotels, and many rentals. Prices are among the most affordable in Halkidiki:
- Studios for 2 people: 40-75 euros/night in June/September, 60-110 in peak
- Apartments for 4 people: 70-110 in normal, 100-160 in peak
- 3* hotel: 70-120 in normal, 110-180 in peak
