Parthenonas is the most "secret" village of Sithonia. Perched at an altitude of 380 meters above Neos Marmaras, it is the highest inhabited village on the second leg of Halkidiki, and one of the most beautiful traditional villages in the region. With only 250 permanent residents — a number that has significantly decreased over the past 50 years — it retains its authentic architecture and unspoiled character, unlike the touristy coastal villages.
Where it is located and how to get there
On the slopes of Mount Itamos, 7 kilometers east of Neos Marmaras, via a narrow but well-paved road. It is 130 km from Thessaloniki in total (2 hours and 15 minutes). From Sarti, it is 20 km away (35 minutes), passing through mountains.
There is no KTEL connection — you need a car or a taxi. From Neos Marmaras, a taxi costs 15-20 euros.
A bit of history
Parthenonas was traditionally a pastoral area and later a center for small agricultural activities. It does not have the refugee history of most villages in Sithonia (which were established after 1922) — it is one of the indigenous settlements with continuous habitation since the Byzantine era. Its architecture retains the traditional stone form, with tiled roofs and wooden details.
In the 1960s to 80s, the population decreased from over 1,000 to a few hundred, as young people migrated to Thessaloniki and the coastal tourist villages. In recent years, there has been a slow repopulation — several residents have returned to engage in agritourism, restoring old houses, and providing local services.
What makes it special
The view
From Parthenonas, the view is one of the most impressive in Halkidiki. From the central square and the edges of the village, you can see:
- The entire Siggitikos Gulf below
- Mount Athos rising across
- The marina and Neos Marmaras at the foot
- Porto Carras further south
- On clear days, the islands of Diaporos on the horizon
The sunset from Parthenonas is among the most memorable in Halkidiki — the sun sets behind the Sinjak peninsula.
The architecture
Stone houses, narrow cobblestone streets, a traditional square with plane trees. There are no "modern" buildings — the village has preserved its old form. It is declared a traditional settlement, and new constructions must respect the architectural style.
The tranquility
Unlike the coastal areas of Sithonia that become heavily touristic in the summer, Parthenonas remains quiet. Visitors are mainly those who come for a meal or to watch the sunset, leaving before nightfall. Those who decide to stay overnight find absolute peace.
Food
Parthenonas is probably the most gastronomic village in Sithonia. In its 4-5 tavernas, the cuisine is authentic, homemade, with local ingredients:
- Lemon lamb or stifado: perhaps the best variations in Halkidiki
- Lamb in the oven: slow-cooked, traditional recipe
- Stuffed vine leaves with minced meat: a local dish
- Baked potatoes with local herbs
- Village feta and cheeses from Cholomontas
- Local wines and tsipouro
My recommendation: try tavernas with a dinner menu (not just grill). Portions are large and prices are 25-35% lower than coastal areas. Overall meal for 2: 35-50 euros.
Activities
- Hiking on Itamos: From Parthenonas, a trail leads to the summit of the mountain (811m). Duration 3-4 hours round trip, moderate difficulty. Marked by the local hiking club.
- Visit the Church of the Virgin Mary: in the central square, with frescoes
- Old school: operates as a small folklore museum during the summer months
- Feast on August 15th: celebration of the Virgin Mary, with local songs, dances, and communal food
- Photography: Parthenonas is particularly photogenic — traditional architecture with stunning views
Accommodation
Few but quality options:
- 3-4 traditional guesthouses in renovated old stone houses — boutique feel, 80-150 euros/night
- A few rental studios and apartments — 50-100 euros
- No chain or large hotel
For those looking to escape the coastal tourist pressure and have an authentic experience of a mountain Greek village, staying in Parthenonas is unique.
How to combine your visit
As a day trip from Neos Marmaras or Sarti
The most common option. Schedule:
- Leave your base around 17:30-18:00
- Arrive at Parthenonas by 18:30
- Walk around the village, take photos
- Dinner at a taverna at 19:30-21:00
- Sunset from the square at 20:30-21:00 (depending on the season)
- Return by 21:30-22:00
As a base for a vacation
Less common, but worth it for those wanting a "mountain" experience:
- 2-3 days in Parthenonas as a base
- Travel to the sea by car (15-20 minutes)
- Hiking in the mountains
- Complete tranquility
As part of a larger itinerary
Combine with visits to other mountain villages: Metangitsi (20 km north), Nikiti - old village, Agios Nikolaos Sithonia (coastal but quieter).
Best time to visit
Unlike the coastal villages, Parthenonas has a decent life year-round — although quieter in winter. Taverns operate in winter, especially on weekends. On summer evenings (June-September), the village fills from 18:00 to midnight with those coming up for dinner and views.
Best times: May-June and September-October, for a combination of hiking and mountain nature without excessive heat.
Ideal for whom
- Those who love traditional mountain villages and architecture
- Those wanting to escape the coastal tourist areas
- Food enthusiasts — here you find truly good food
- Photographers
- Hikers
- Couples looking for a "romantic" experience different from the classic coastal one
Practical information
- 1 small supermarket and 1-2 small grocery stores
- 1 ATM (Piraeus) — but do not rely solely on this. Safer to have cash with you
- No pharmacy within the village — nearest in Neos Marmaras
- 4G coverage is satisfactory
- Free parking on the outskirts of the village (no cars on the cobblestones)
- Bring a sweater for the evenings even in August — the altitude cools down
