Pefkochori is the southernmost major tourist village of Kassandra. With around 2,500 permanent residents and a capacity of over 15,000 people in the summer, it is one of the most popular vacation spots in Halkidiki. It combines an excellent beach, good infrastructure, stable prices, and a more tranquil atmosphere than Hanioti — which is just 3 kilometers to the north. This guide explains what makes Pefkochori a unique choice and what to look for.
Location and How to Get There
On the southeastern coast of Kassandra, 105 kilometers from Thessaloniki, with a driving time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. From SKG airport, it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
With Halkidiki KTEL, there are 4-6 daily routes in the summer, lasting 2 hours, costing 14 euros.
History and Character
The modern name "Pefkochori" comes from the extensive pine forests in the area that reach almost to the sea — a unique feature of Kassandra. The village's old name was "Kapsohora" — from the burning/fire of the old settlement form. The village consists of two parts: the old Pefkochori (more inland from the beach, with a traditional character) and the coastal Pefkochori, which developed as a tourist center in the 1970s-90s.
Compared to Hanioti, which is more "party-oriented", Pefkochori has a more family-friendly and balanced atmosphere.
The Beach — The Main Advantage
The beach of Pefkochori is among the best in Kassandra:
- Length: 3+ kilometers of continuous sandy coastline
- Depth: shallow for a long distance — ideal for families
- Sand: fine, golden
- Shade: natural from the pines at the back (a rare advantage)
- Facilities: sunbeds, beach bars, showers in the busier areas
- Free sections: at the ends of the beach
- Blue Flag: most years
Its large expanse means that even on the busiest days in August, you can find space for a towel.
Other nearby beaches:
- Skala Fourkas: 5 km to the north
- Agia Paraskevi Loutra: 4 km to the south, with thermal springs
- Paliouri: 8 km to the south
- Nea Skioni: 12 km to the west (another coast of Kassandra)
Food
Pefkochori offers quite a variety:
- Fish tavernas on the waterfront and at the small harbor. Fresh fish, regular prices
- Traditional tavernas in the old village — here you find the best local cuisine and the most "reasonable" prices
- Pizza and Italian: several pizzerias, some of good quality
- Souvlakerie: throughout the village, for quick and cheap food
- Cafes and brunch spots: on the waterfront
Prices: 30-50 euros for a table for 2 at a taverna, 50-80 at a fish taverna with a fish portion.
Nightlife
Quieter than neighboring Hanioti — which is the main party center of Kassandra. In Pefkochori, there are several bars and cafes, some beach bars that stay open late, and a few smaller clubs. Good for couples and families who want a "night out" without excess. If you want an intense party scene, drive 5 minutes north.
Accommodation
Pefkochori has several categories:
- Budget studios: 50-90 euros/night in June/September
- Family apartments for 4 people: 80-130 in normal season, 130-200 in peak
- 3-4* hotels: 90-150 in normal season, 150-250 in peak
- 5* resorts (Mykonian Resort and a few others): from 250-300 euros/night up to 500+
- Traditional guesthouses in the old village: more "boutique" feel, prices 70-130 euros
Due to its size and variety, you can always find something even for late bookings — except for the last weeks of August.
