Polygyros is the capital of the Halkidiki region — the only proper town in the area, with around 7,000 permanent residents. Unlike the seaside villages that most tourists are familiar with, Polygyros is a mountainous town at an altitude of 550 meters, characterized as an administrative and commercial center. It is where all the important government services, hospitals, courts, and main educational institutions of the region are located.
Location and How to Get There
In central Halkidiki, 69 kilometers from Thessaloniki (1 hour 15 minutes drive via National Road 16). It is the geographical center of the region and a starting point for the three peninsulas.
With KTEL Halkidiki, the schedules are frequent daily — quite a few per hour during peak periods.
A Bit of History
Polygyros is one of the most historically significant settlements in Halkidiki. Its name comes from the ancient "polygyrus" (circular), due to the circular layout of its old roads. It has been continuously inhabited since Byzantine times.
During the Ottoman period, it was an important center of Ottoman administration for all of Halkidiki. In the revolution of 1821, Polygyros played a leading role — the town actively participated in the struggle and suffered severe destruction.
Since 1912, after liberation, Polygyros became the capital of the newly established Halkidiki region, and its identity as an administrative center has been maintained to this day.
