Stratoni is a small seaside village in northeastern Halkidiki, historically connected to the mining activities of the area. With around 1,000 permanent residents, it retains the character of a working community — many residents are involved with the nearby Stratoni mines, which are still active today. It is not a classic tourist destination, but it deserves the attention of those seeking authenticity away from the mass scene.
Location and How to Get There
Located on the northeastern coast of Halkidiki, between Ierissos and Olympiada. It is 100 kilometers (1 hour 35 minutes drive) from Thessaloniki. From Ierissos: 12 km south. From Olympiada: 12 km north.
There are 2-3 daily bus routes via KTEL, connecting through Arnaia and Stratoni.
The Mining History
The area of Stratoni and Stratoniki (the mountain village 7 km inland) has had continuous mining activity since ancient times. Ancient quarries and furnaces are among the earliest global references to silver, gold, and copper. During the Byzantine centuries, the area was significant for the production of silver for imperial coins.
Today, the mines (Hellenic Gold / Hellas Gold) extract gold, silver, lead, and zinc. The mining activity is a source of debate and controversy regarding environmental impacts, but it remains important for the local economy.
Visit: the Stratoniki Mining Park and some old galleries with guided tours (periodically).
The Beach
Stratoni has a 2-kilometer sandy beach with a Blue Flag most years. It is not one of the most impressive beaches in Halkidiki — but it is quiet, clean, and practical. Partially organized with sunbeds in certain areas.
Best nearby beaches:
- Kalami Beach of Stratoniki: 5 km south, small and quiet with a pine forest
- Pyrgos: 4 km north, beach towards Ierissos
- Olympiada: 12 km north
- Nea Roda: 18 km north
Food
There are a few good fish taverns along the waterfront, serving fresh fish from local boats. Specialties include:
- Mussels from nearby mussel farms
- Sardines and anchovies from local catches
- Octopus from the rocky shores
- Traditional dishes in some local taverns
Prices are low: 25-40 euros for a table for 2 — among the most affordable in Halkidiki.
Accommodation
There are a few small accommodations and rentals. There are no large hotels. Options include:
- Studios: 40-70 euros/night in June/September, 60-100 during peak
- 4-person apartments: 60-100 in normal, 90-140 in peak

It is one of the cheapest spots in Halkidiki for beach vacations.
