A Bit of History
Varvara is one of the indigenous settlements of central Halkidiki. During the Ottoman period, it was an important center of mining activity — the Mademochoria were a privileged community that had a special tax regime due to the provision of ore to the Ottoman administration. In the 1821 revolution, Varvara actively participated in the struggle.
Today, the population has significantly decreased from earlier levels, but the village retains its traditional spirit and many stone houses from the 19th century.
