Vourvourou is perhaps the most "island-like" destination in Halkidiki. It is not a typical village with a central square and local population — it is mainly a scattered residential area with villas, hotels, and small accommodations along its lace-like coastline. What sets it apart is the cluster of 9 small islands that stretches out in front of it — a scene almost Caribbean that is rarely found in mainland Greece. This guide explains what makes it special.
Where it is located and how to get there
In northeastern Sithonia, between Nikiti and Sarti. It is 120 kilometers (about 2 hours drive) from Thessaloniki. From Neos Marmaras: 25 km (35 minutes via mountain road).
There are 2-3 bus trips daily with KTEL, but a car is practically essential because the area is scattered — you might need to drive 3-4 km from your accommodation to the beach.
The 9 islands — the main spectacular element
In front of Vourvourou lies a cluster of small islands:
- Diaporos (the largest, ~2 sq. km)
- Agios Isidoros with a small chapel
- Prasonisi
- Ambelos
- Peleki and Pelekinaki
- Kalogiros
- Pepperi
- Sklivra
All are uninhabited, with partially pine forest vegetation, and turquoise-emerald colored waters. You can explore them by:
- Group cruise: departs at 10:00 from the small harbor, duration 5-6 hours, cost 30-45 euros per person. Lunch included.
- Private boat: for groups of 4-8 people, 300-500 euros for a full day. A more flexible experience.
- Kayak or SUP: rentals from Vourvourou beach. You can reach the closest islets with your own strength (requires some experience).
- Your own boat: if you have or rent one, you can explore freely. There are excellent anchoring spots at the rocky beaches of several islands.
Beaches
Vourvourou does not have a "central" beach — it has several scattered ones, each with a different character:
- Karydi: the most famous beach in the area (and perhaps in all of Halkidiki). Fine white sand, turquoise waters, shallow seabed. Organized with a beach bar and paid parking. Photogenic reputation — but often crowded.
- Livari: quieter, with sand dunes and pine forest
- Fava: a small cove with pebbles
- Pefkochori Vourvourou (not the one in Kassandra): sandy
- Petrocheri: a quiet beach with rocky corners ideal for snorkeling
Additionally, the way the area is designed (many small coves) means that almost every hotel/accommodation has its own access to the sea.
Food
In the wider area, there are several fish taverns and beach bars. The small harbor of Vourvourou has 2-3 taverns serving fresh fish. Compared to Sarti or Neos Marmaras, the scene is smaller but of high quality. Prices are normal for tourist Sithonia.
My recommendation: dining on the island of Diaporos during a cruise — the island's only tavern is part of the experience.
Accommodation
Vourvourou has a unique character — many "boutique" accommodations and villas, fewer large hotels. Options include:
- Studios and apartments: 70-130 euros/night in June/September, 130-200 in peak
- 3-4* hotels: 100-180 in normal, 170-280 in peak
- Villas with pools: from 250 to 800+ euros/night depending on size
- 4-5* boutique resorts (Ekies, Anthemus Sea Beach): from 300-400 euros/night, but of excellent quality
Vourvourou is one of the more expensive areas of Sithonia — reflecting the quality of the natural environment.
Activities beyond the beach
- Boat trip to the islands: the must-do activity
- Kayaking / SUP: the calm sea of the Singitic Gulf is ideal
- Snorkeling: around the rocky sides of the islands, excellent visibility
- Scuba diving: 1-2 dive centers in the area, possibility of dives at ancient shipwrecks
- Sunset cruise: 2-3 hour evening trips
- Hiking: trail from Vourvourou to Itamos, or to Agios Nikolaos Sithonia
- Visit to Parthenon: 20 km south, a mountain village for dinner and views
Who it is ideal for
- Couples looking for an "island" experience without traveling to an island
- Photography enthusiasts — the scenes with the islands are unique
- Snorkelers and divers
- Those seeking a "boutique" experience instead of mass tourism
- Families with older children who can appreciate boat trips
- Kayakers and SUP enthusiasts
Who it is not ideal for
- Those looking for a "lively village" with a square and local population (Vourvourou is scattered)
- Those wanting nightlife
- Budget travelers (prices are among the highest in Sithonia)
- Families with very young children who need nearby medical facilities (the nearest health center is in Nikiti, 15 km away)
Best time to visit
Like all of Halkidiki, June and September. In Vourvourou, the difference between peak and off-peak is significant — in August, the area is intensely crowded, and island cruises require booking 2-3 days in advance. In September, the cruises are almost empty and the experience is much more "private".
Practical information
- 2 supermarkets in the area, more abundant in Nikiti (15 km)
- 1 ATM (don’t rely completely — have cash)
- There is no pharmacy in Vourvourou itself — the nearest is in Nikiti
- Gas station in Nikiti
- 4G coverage is satisfactory in most areas
- No Wolt/efood
- Some accommodations have EV charging stations — check before booking
