Vrasta is a small mountain village in central Halkidiki, at an altitude of 500 meters, on the slopes of Cholomon. With only about 400 permanent residents, it is one of the smallest and most authentic villages in the region — completely off the classic tourist paths. Those seeking genuine rural Halkidiki, without tourist distortions, will find it here.
Where it is located and how to get there
In central Halkidiki, 13 kilometers northeast of Polygyros. It is 80 kilometers from Thessaloniki (1 hour 20 minutes drive). The road is paved but narrow, through a pine forest.
There is no KTEL connection — a car is essential.
A bit of history
Vrasta is one of the indigenous settlements of central Halkidiki with continuous habitation since Byzantine times. Traditionally an agricultural community, with occupations in livestock farming, beekeeping, and viticulture. In the 1960s to 1990s, the population significantly decreased due to internal migration to Thessaloniki and coastal areas.
What you will find
Vrasta is one of the villages that does not offer "sights" in the tourist sense. There is no archaeological site, museum, or impressive church. What exists:
- Traditional architecture: stone houses, small cobblestone paths, fountains
- Panoramic view of the Toroneos Gulf from the highest points
- One or two traditional tavernas with homemade food
- Forest around for walking
- Production of local honey, olive oil, and cheeses
- Peace — absolute
Food
In Vrasta, there are 1-2 tavernas offering authentic mountain cuisine. Specialties include:
- Local goat meat: roasted or stew
- Homemade dishes: giant beans, chickpeas
- Local cheeses and homemade bread
- Local honey in desserts
- Local house wine
Prices are very affordable: 25-35 euros for a table for 2.
Accommodation
Almost non-existent official infrastructure. 1-2 traditional guesthouses or Airbnb-style rentals. For those looking for "rest" in an authentic mountain village, these accommodations offer a unique experience. Prices range from 40-70 euros/night.
It is more practical to visit Vrasta as a day trip from Polygyros or as part of a larger route in the mountains of Halkidiki.
Visiting combinations
Vrasta combines well with:
- Polygyros: 13 km south — Archaeological Museum, traditional town

- Varvara: 8 km north
- Hiking in Cholomon: forest trails start from Vrasta leading to the mountain
