Uranoupoli is the last "political" village before you reach Mount Athos. From here, ferries to Dafni (the official port of the monasteries) depart, accommodation permits are issued at the local office, and cruises that allow women to see the monasteries from the sea set off. Although it is the "gateway" to Mount Athos, Uranoupoli is also a regular holiday destination with notable beaches, good food, and a more "calm" atmosphere compared to the tourist centers of Kassandra or Sithonia.
Location and How to Get There
Uranoupoli is located 130 kilometers from Thessaloniki — about 2 hours and 10 minutes by car. The route passes through Poligyros, Arnaia, Stageira, and Ierissos. It is one of the most picturesque routes in Halkidiki — many parts of it are through forests and mountainous landscapes.
With the Halkidiki KTEL, there are 4 daily routes in the summer, lasting 2 hours and 40 minutes, costing 14 euros. It is one of the most decent connections in the region.
The Village and Its Name
Uranoupoli was established as a modern village in 1922, after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, by refugees from Cappadocia. The name "Uranoupoli" (City of Heaven) was given by English archaeologists and missionaries — Sydney and Joyce Loch — who lived there from 1928 to 1982 in a medieval tower. Before this, the place was called "Tower" after the Byzantine tower that dominates the front.
The Tower of Uranoupoli (built in the 14th century as a fortress for the Vatopedi Monastery) is the most characteristic building in the area. Today, it houses a museum with items from the history of the area and the life of the Lochs. Entrance is 3 euros.
Beaches
The central beach of Uranoupoli is long, sandy, and has a Blue Flag. It may not be the most impressive in Halkidiki, but it is practical (within the village), family-friendly, and offers a nice view of Athos.
More impressive nearby beaches:
- Dragoudeli: 3 km south of Uranoupoli. A very nice sandy beach with pines. Less crowded.
- Komitza: 5 km south. A small hidden cove with a pine forest. Access via a dirt road.
- Nea Roda (5 km north): a traditional fishing village with a beach and various taverns.
- Amouliani Beaches: with a 10-minute ferry, you can reach Amouliani Island, which has its own excellent beaches (Alykes, Megali Ammos).
Mount Athos — from Uranoupoli
For Men with Accommodation Permits
In Uranoupoli, there is the Pilgrims' Office that issues accommodation permits — it is close to the port. You pick up your approval (which you have requested in advance with an application 1-3 months prior), pay 30 euros (35 for heterodox), and board the ferry to Dafni.
The official ferry "Agios Panteleimon" departs at 9:45 AM daily. The journey lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes. Ticket price is around 8 euros.
For Women and Those Without Accommodation Permits: Cruise
From the port of Uranoupoli, 3-4 cruises depart daily along the western coast of Athos. They maintain a distance of 500 meters from the shore (by law), but are close enough to see the monasteries: Dochiariou, Xenophon, Agios Panteleimon (Russian), Xyropotamos, Simonopetra, Dionysiou, Agios Pavlos.
Duration of the cruise: 3-4 hours. Cost: 25-35 euros for adults, half price for children. Usually, a guided tour is provided by an Orthodox priest or theologian.
Amouliani — Day Trip
The only inhabited island of Halkidiki, just 10 minutes by ferry from Tripiti (3 km south of Uranoupoli). The ferry departs every 30-45 minutes in the summer, with a ticket costing 2-3 euros for pedestrians, 10-15 euros for cars.
On the island:
- Beaches with crystal-clear waters (Alykes, Megali Ammos)
- Traditional fish taverns — famous for Amouliani mussels (the area has significant mussel farms)
- Bicycle rentals for exploring (the island is only 4.5 sq. km)
- Small cruises around the island that stop at hidden coves.
A great all-day trip — start in the morning, return in the afternoon.
Food
Uranoupoli has a decent gastronomic scene, mainly with seafood. At the small harbor, there are several traditional fish taverns where the fish come directly from the boats. Due to the presence of many pilgrims (who eat fasting food during several periods), many restaurants specialize in fasting dishes and oil-free meals — something rare in other areas of Halkidiki.
Try: grilled octopus, Amouliani mussels, grilled red mullet, Siggitiko shrimp. Normal prices: 35-55 euros for a table for 2.
Accommodation
Uranoupoli has more hotels and apartments than one might think — it serves both tourists and pilgrims before their visit to Mount Athos. There are options ranging from budget to 5-star (Eagles Palace, Skites).
Indicative prices:
- Apartment for 4 people: 80-130 euros/night in normal season, 130-200 in peak season.
- 3-4 star hotel: 100-180 in normal season, 180-280 in peak season.
- 5-star resort (Eagles Palace): from 350 euros/night in peak season.
What Else You Can Do
- Hiking to the border of Athos: coastal path 8-10 km to the south, up to the official border of the monastic state. Return via the same route or by taxi.
- Kayaking or SUP: available for rent from the beach of Uranoupoli. You can paddle around the small islands in the area.
- Scuba Diving: one or two dive centers offer dives along the rocky coasts of Amouliani and Athos.
- Tower of Uranoupoli: museum visit, 30-45 minutes.
- Visit women's monasteries in the area: a bit further into the Athos peninsula, there are women's monasteries open to all (Ormilia, Agia Anastasia Pharmakolytria). Great for those wanting a "monastic" experience without the restrictions of the monastic state.
Best Time to Visit
Like all of Halkidiki, June and September. Uranoupoli has a more stable flow of visitors than other areas because the tourism of pilgrims is not limited to a season — there is activity in April-May and October-November as well.
The Easter period has a special energy — countless pilgrims pass through Uranoupoli to visit the monasteries, and the atmosphere is intensely Orthodox.
