Halkidiki has a geographical advantage that makes it stand out for sunsets: its three peninsulas are oriented in such a way that a large part of the western coast faces directly west, while from the eastern coast of Sithonia, the sun sets behind Athos — a view rarely seen in other Greek regions. This guide maps out the best spots, with specific sunset times and what makes each one special.
When the Sun Sets in Halkidiki
Indicative sunset times for different seasons:
- June-July: 20:50-21:00
- August: 20:25-20:45
- September: 19:45-20:20
- October: 18:55-19:30
- May: 20:30-20:50
The ideal timing to arrive at the spot is 30-40 minutes before sunset — this period, known as the "magic hour," is when the light is warm and the colors are richer. The actual "sunset" lasts only 10-15 minutes. The twilight that follows ("blue hour") lasts another 20-30 minutes and is also enchanting for photography.
1. Possidi (Cape Possidi) — the "king"
At the southern tip of Kassandra. Cape Possidi "juts out" into the sea and offers a 270° view of the horizon. The Possidi lighthouse is the ideal vantage point to stand. The sun sets over the open sea of the Thermaic Gulf — no land to "hide" it early. If the weather is clear, you can see Olympus on the horizon (110 km away).
Practical: about 25 minutes drive from Nea Fokaia or Siviere. Parking is available near the lighthouse, followed by a 5-minute walk. There are no kiosks there — bring your own snacks.
2. Sarti — sunset behind Athos
The eastern coast of Sithonia has a rare feature: the sun sets behind the Athos peninsula. From Sarti and other beaches on this side (Sykia, Kalamitsi, Platanitsi), you can see the sun descending behind the pointed peak of Athos (2,033m). The silhouette of the mountain turns black against an orange backdrop. This view is unique in Greece.
Best spot: the large beach of Sarti, especially its southern part. Beach bars operate late, so you can stay for a drink afterward.
3. Parthenon (mountain village)
At 380 meters above sea level. From the village square, or even better from the edges above the rocky slopes, the view opens up towards the Singitic Gulf and Athos. Due to the elevation, the horizon stretches out in stunning depth — you can see the entire Neos Marmaras below, its marina, and the Singitic Gulf far away.
Eat at one of the village tavernas before sunset, and then take a few steps outside for the view. On a clear day, locals say you can "see all the way to Lemnos."
4. Siviere Marina
On the same western side of Kassandra as Possidi, but with a different vibe. The marina of Siviere has sailboats and wooden boats in the foreground, and the sun sets over the marina. A photographic composition rarely found — the reflection of the sunset on the still waters of the marina multiplies the color.
There are also tavernas and bars along the waterfront — you can enjoy a drink with a view.
5. Sani Cape
From the cape of Sani, at the northern edge of Sani Resort, you have a wide western view. A different feel from Possidi — here the sun sets over the horizon of the Thermaic Gulf with the landscapes of the wetland in the background. A more "organized" experience (you can be at the resort's beach bar), but equally impressive.
6. Afytos — panoramic from the village
Afytos is built on a high cliff above the sea. From the central square or from some cafes-restaurants on the slopes, the view towards the west covers the entire Thermaic Gulf. A different philosophy: you are not on a beach, you are in a village — but the view of the sunset combines with the traditional architecture of the village.
7. Neos Marmaras (Marina)
From the marina of Neos Marmaras, the sun sets in the Singitic Gulf over the islands. The port has several cafes and bars along the waterfront. Less "dramatic" than Sarti (you don’t have Athos in the frame), but a more "lifestyle" experience — you choose your drink and enjoy.
8. Porto Koufo (from outside the bay)
The bay of Porto Koufo is closed, so from inside you can't see the sunset clearly. However, if you walk towards the southern tip of the cape (a path from the village, 1-1.5 hours), you reach a point where the view opens up to the open sea. The sun sets with Sithonia gradually disappearing into darkness behind it. Probably the most "off-the-beaten-path" sunset spot in the region.
9. Olympiada
In the northeastern part of Halkidiki. Olympiada is a fishing village overlooking the Strymonic Gulf. The sun sets over Mount Stratoniko and the picturesque harbor takes on golden hues. More "atmospheric" compared to the more western spots — especially if combined with dinner at a mussel taverna in the village.
10. Ouranoupoli — with Athos beside
At the northern starting point of the Athos peninsula. From the beach of Ouranoupoli or even better from the Ammouliani Tower (or the small elevated pedestrian bridge in the village), you can see the Athos peninsula extending south, with the sun setting beside it. Noteworthy for its mystical feel — you are right at the edge of the "world" and Mount Athos.
Tips for a Better Experience
- Weather: the most dramatic sunsets occur when there are a few scattered clouds in the sky — they reflect the orange. Clear sky = beautiful but "ordinary" sunset.
- Dust/humidity: after a southern wind that brings dust from Africa, sunsets are more intensely red/orange.
- Moon: if it coincides with a full moon, the moon rises almost immediately after sunset. A double spectacle.
- Photography: set the exposure manually (auto often "blows out" the sunset). For mobile phones, a quick tap on the sky reduces exposure. To photograph people with the sunset as a background, you need a flash or reflector.
- Bring a light jacket: after sunset, the temperature drops quickly — you might need a light long-sleeve even in August.
Sunset Cruise — the Alternative
If you want the experience but don’t want to stand at a spot, there are sunset cruises with small boats departing from Neos Marmaras, Sarti, Siviere, Porto Koufo, and Ouranoupoli. Duration 2-3 hours, cost 35-55 euros per person. Usually includes a drink and light snack. The boat heads out to sea and moves towards the sunset, with ideal light unobstructed.
