If it's your first visit to Halkidiki, there are several things that would be useful to know before you arrive. Halkidiki has a specific geography, culture, and practices that differ from other Greek destinations. This guide gathers the most important tips.
1. Choose the Right Leg
Halkidiki has three legs with completely different characters. This is the most important decision before you arrive:
- Kassandra (first leg): more touristy, organized, good for first-timers. All the infrastructure, easy access.
- Sithonia (second): more natural, stunning beaches, more of an "island" feel.
- Athos (third): the monastic state — only men with accommodation inside, for women only cruises.
Recommendation for first-time visitors: Kassandra for convenience or Sithonia for beauty.
2. A Car is Almost Essential
Halkidiki does not have reliable transportation between destinations. If you want to see more than one beach or village, rent a car. From Thessaloniki airport or local offices in the city — prices are 35-55 euros/day for a compact in summer.
3. Choose the Right Period
- June and September: ideal — warm sea, fewer crowds, good prices
- July-August: peak — crowded, lively, expensive
- May and October: milder, less infrastructure in operation
- November-April: almost everything closed — don’t visit unless you want a winter experience
4. Book Early
For July-August, book accommodation 3-4 months in advance. For June-September, 1-2 months is sufficient. Late bookings in August for good destinations are almost impossible.
5. Have Cash on Hand
Although most tavernas and hotels accept cards, there are places that only accept cash:
- Small grocery stores in villages
- Beach bars on secluded beaches
- Snack bars
- KTEL tickets
- Ferry to Ammouliani
- Local markets
- Athos (all)
Have around 100-200 euros in cash for flexibility.
6. Take Sun Protection Seriously
The sun exposure in Halkidiki is intense — especially at noon. SPF 50, hat, sunglasses, and reapply every 2 hours. Just 20-30 minutes directly in the sun can burn sensitive skin.
7. Eat at Taverns with Local Patrons
The best taverns are NOT those with an English menu and photos. They are the ones where you see local Greeks gathering. Ask for advice from your accommodation owner — not just from Google.
8. Always Ask the Price of Fish Before Ordering
Fish at fish taverns is priced per kilo (45-90 euros/kilo). An 800g fish can cost 50-70 euros. Always ask and request to have it weighed in front of you.
9. Snorkeling Equipment — Bring Your Own
Rental equipment is worn out and costs 5-10 euros per day. A mask and snorkel from Decathlon or similar: 25-40 euros one-time. It’s worth it if you plan to go snorkeling 3+ times.
10. Wifi and Internet
Halkidiki has good 4G/5G coverage in the main villages. In remote areas (e.g., Kavourotripes, some mountain trails) the signal is weak. Wifi in hotels and taverns is almost everywhere free.
11. Water
Tap water in Halkidiki is drinkable almost everywhere — you don’t need bottled water. In some mountainous areas with spring water, the quality is excellent.
12. Language
In tourist areas, many speak English, German, and Balkan languages. In mountain villages and small coastal areas, English is less common. A few Greek words (good morning, thank you, please) help.
13. Confusion Between Sani and Sano
Sani (coastal, with the famous 5* resort) is completely different from Sano (a small mountain settlement with no particular interest). Always check the name carefully before making a reservation.
14. Athos for Women
If you are a woman and want to see Athos, the option is a cruise from Ouranoupoli or Ierissos. Entry to the peninsula is prohibited. The cruise keeps a distance of 500m from the shore, but the monasteries are clearly visible.
15. Sunset Tip
Halkidiki has stunning sunsets. The best spots:
- Poseidonia Lighthouse (south Kassandra) — the top choice
- Parthenon (Sithonia) — with a view of Athos
- Beaches of Eastern Sithonia (Sarti, Platanitsi): the sun sets behind Athos — a rare sight
Overall Recommendation for First Timers
5-7 days, a car, June or September, base in Kallithea (Kassandra) or Neos Marmaras (Sithonia). Daily schedule: beach in the morning, dinner at a tavern in the evening, day trips every 2-3 days to a different area. Welcome to Halkidiki!
