Kassandra, the first leg of Halkidiki, has over 100 kilometers of coastline and around 50 named beaches. Compared to Sithonia, it is more "organized", easier to explore, and more family-friendly. The hotels are larger, the beaches more accessible, and the infrastructure denser. Below is my top-10 list — not an arbitrary ranking, but a diverse list covering different types of experiences: from resort beaches to quiet corners.
1. Sani
On the northwestern coast of Kassandra. Fine white sand, shallow waters extending for over 50 meters, fully organized. The beach of the namesake resort has controlled access for guests, but the public Sani next to it is free and offers nearly the same quality. Next to it is the protected wetland of Angistrou, home to pink flamingos during the winter months.
Good for: families with babies, premium feel, sunset views of Athos.
2. Possidi (Cape)
At the southern tip of Kassandra. Cape Possidi has a unique feature: being a "tongue" of land, it has beaches on both sides. On the north side, calm waters. On the south side, a more open sea with small waves. Between them lies Trani Ammos — a white sandy dune with a pine forest nearby, the most impressive photographic composition in Kassandra. The Possidi Lighthouse at the tip of the cape is one of the most beautiful spots for sunset in Halkidiki.
Good for: those who want a choice of calm or wavy waters in the same day, sunset.
3. Kallithea Central
Inside the village of Kallithea. It may not be the most impressive beach, but it is the most practical — a stroll from everything, organized, with many beach bars and tavernas nearby. Good atmosphere both day and night. The ancient Kallithea Thermal Baths, of archaeological interest, are also located on the same beach.
Good for: those who want a "complete" summer package without moving around.
4. Pefkochori
A very large sandy beach (over 3 km) with pine trees reaching almost to the sea. Its vast space means that even at the peak of August, you can find room for a towel. Partially organized (near the village center), partially free (at the edges). Free parking at the ends.
Good for: families, couples looking to avoid congestion, large groups.
5. Afytos
The beach below the namesake stone village. It combines two elements rarely found together: traditional beauty (with the beautiful stone village above you) and a good beach. The cliff below Afytos has small hidden coves to explore by swimming. The main beach (Alykes) is sandy and organized.
Good for: couples, those wanting to combine beach with architectural interest.
6. Paliouri
At the southern tip of Kassandra, just before reaching the exit of the peninsula. A large sandy beach surrounded by pine trees. More "family-oriented" than Kallithea, with less nightlife. The nearby Agia Paraskevi Baths also have thermal springs, if you want to combine.
Good for: quiet family vacations, seniors.
7. Siviri
In southern Kassandra, with a sandy beach and pine trees. The Siviri marina is one of the most beautiful in Halkidiki — small boats, sailboats, tavernas along the waterfront. The beach is of moderate size but well organized. For couples wanting to combine beach with a sunset cruise (departing from the marina).
Good for: couples, lovers of nautical atmosphere.
8. Agios Nikolaos (Siviri)
A smaller beach 2 km from Siviri towards Pefkochori. Less known, quieter. Sandy with pine trees. It lacks the infrastructure of the other large beaches, but has 1-2 tavernas and the tranquility one needs.
Good for: those wanting to avoid the crowds of the more popular beaches.
9. Hanioti
The most "touristy-party" beach in Kassandra. Large, organized, with dozens of beach bars, radar, and water sports. During the day it is lively, and at night it turns into a party zone with crowds until late. Not for peace — but if that's what you're looking for (action, fun, company), it's the top choice.
Good for: young people, groups wanting fun, those seeking the Greek summer party scene.
10. Nea Fokaia
In northwestern Kassandra, after Nea Moudania. Less "touristy" and more "fishing village" feel. Good waters, more local crowd. A good choice if you don't want the big "Mykonos-like" vibe and prefer an authentic small Greek beach. The taverna at the small harbor has a reputation for its fish.
Good for: those seeking authenticity, dinner at a fish taverna after the beach.
Mentions that didn't make the top-10
- Fourka — organized, family-friendly
- Scala Fourkas — neighboring, quieter
- Portes — small and picturesque
- Kryopigi — pine forest nearby, sandy
- Polychrono — family-friendly, consistently good
- Agios Mamas — in the north, more "local" character
How to Choose Based on Beach
If it's your first visit to Halkidiki and you want to see a lot, stay in Kallithea or Hanioti and take day trips to Sani, Possidi, Afytos.
If you want peace, aim for Paliouri or Siviri.
If you want luxury, Sani is the obvious choice, but there are also other 5* resorts in Kallithea and Nea Potidea.
If you want party/youth, Hanioti is by far the top choice.
Practical Information for Kassandra Beaches
- Parking: after 11:00 in August, at popular spots (Kallithea, Sani, Possidi) you may need more than 5 minutes of walking. At other beaches, it's easy.
- Sunbeds: 8-15 euros per pair depending on the beach. At premium beach clubs, it can reach 30-60.
- Lifeguard: at most Blue Flag beaches in Kassandra, available from 10:00-18:00 during the summer months.
- Water sports: jet ski, banana boat, parasailing available in Hanioti, Kallithea, Sani. Prices range from 30-80 euros per "ride".
- Marinas: the largest beach resorts (Sani, Porto Carras) have private marinas if you arrive by boat.
Kassandra generally has slightly warmer and calmer waters than Sithonia due to the protection of the Thermaic Gulf. This makes it ideal for prolonged swimming and for children who want "normal" warm sea.
