The Monastery of Philotheou is located on the **southeastern coast** at a high position overlooking the Aegean Sea. It was founded in the **10th century** by Saint Philotheos and holds the **12th place** in the hierarchy. It is one of the **most strictly communal** monasteries of Mount Athos — the schedule of services is followed with meticulousness: Midnight Office, Matins, Vespers, Compline, adhering to Byzantine time. Two significant icons are preserved: the **Panagia Glykophilousa** (one of the oldest icons on Mount Athos) and the **Panagia Eleousa**. There are also over 250 manuscripts. The monastery experienced a spiritual revival in the 20th century under Elder Ephraim, who subsequently founded several Orthodox monasteries in North America. Access: boat from Dafni (45-60 minutes) or on foot from Karakallou (45 minutes). The path through the forest is well marked. It hosts visitors.
