Amouliani: The Small Island with a Big Charm
Amouliani is the only inhabited island of Halkidiki, located in the bay of Mount Athos, opposite the peninsula of Athos. With just 4.5 square kilometers in area, this small island offers an authentic island experience without the crowds of larger tourist islands.
How to Get There
Access to Amouliani is exclusively by ferry from the small port of Tripiti, which is about 120 kilometers from Thessaloniki. Ferries operate daily, with a frequency of every 30-45 minutes during the summer months. The journey takes about 10 minutes. You can also take your car on the ferry, although the island is small enough to explore on foot or by renting a bicycle. Tickets cost about 2-3 euros for pedestrians and 10-15 euros for a car.
The Beaches
Alykes
The most famous beach on the island, featuring golden sand and shallow turquoise waters. Located on the southwestern side, it is organized with sunbeds and a canteen. Ideal for families due to the shallow waters.
Megali Ammos
A large sandy beach near the settlement. Easily accessible, with several tavernas nearby. The waters are clear and relatively calm.
Agios Georgios
A quiet beach on the eastern side of the island. Less organized, perfect for those seeking tranquility. Offers a view of Mount Athos.
Karvouna and Tsaska
Smaller, secluded beaches that are mainly accessed by boat or hiking trails. Ideal for peaceful excursions.
Food and Taverns
The village of Amouliani has several traditional tavernas serving fresh seafood. Try the Amouliani mussels, which are considered some of the best in the area, as there are mussel farms in the bay. Grilled shrimp and octopus are also excellent. Don’t miss out on trying the local tsipouro, which pairs perfectly with the meze.
Accommodation
Amouliani offers various accommodation options: small hotels, rental rooms, and studios. Early bookings are essential for July and August, as demand is high. Prices range from 50 to 120 euros per night, depending on the season.
A Bit of History
Amouliani belonged to the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos until 1924, when refugees from Asia Minor settled there. This history gives the island a unique cultural identity that you can feel in its architecture and traditions.
Best Time to Visit
June and September are ideal months. The sea is warm, prices are more affordable, and the atmosphere is more relaxed. In July and August, the island gets crowded, but its vibrancy is worth it.
