Arnaia is one of the most beautiful traditional villages in Halkidiki. At an altitude of 600 meters, on the slopes of Cholomontas, with around 2,500 permanent residents, it is large enough to have full infrastructure, yet small enough to maintain authentic traditional architecture and life. It is designated as a traditional settlement, and the area of the old center retains cobbled streets with stone two-story houses from the 19th century.
Location and How to Get There
In northern central Halkidiki, 80 km from Thessaloniki (1 hour 25 minutes drive). On the route to eastern Halkidiki (Ierissos, Olympiada, Ouranoupoli).
With KTEL Halkidiki, there are 3-4 daily routes.
A Bit of History
Arnaia had a significant historical presence as part of the Mantemochoria — the privileged mining villages of Ottoman Halkidiki. Due to the provision of silver ore to the Ottoman administration, the residents had a special tax regime and social rights, which allowed the preservation of the Greek language and Orthodoxy.
During the revolution of 1821, Arnaia played a leading role and suffered significant destruction from Ottoman troops.
