Gerakini is a seaside village in central Halkidiki, located in the Toroneos Gulf, between Polygyros and Nikiti. With around 600 permanent residents, it is one of the most "local" beach villages in the region — mainly attracting Thessaloniki residents who come on weekends, rather than mass foreign tourism. Its large sandy beach, tranquil character, and relatively close distance from Thessaloniki make it popular for those seeking a relaxing vacation without the pressure of mass tourism.
Location and How to Get There
On the central coast of Halkidiki, 87 kilometers from Thessaloniki (1 hour 15 minutes drive). From Polygyros: 16 km south. It is the closest seaside point to the capital of the region.
There are 3-4 daily bus routes from KTEL Halkidiki during the summer.
A Bit of History
The name "Gerakini" comes either from the hawk (a bird common in the wider area) or from a Byzantine lord named Gerakini who had a estate there. The modern form of the village was shaped after 1922 with the settlement of refugees, although the area had previously seen some habitation.
In the 1980s and 90s, Gerakini was known for the magnesium mines that operated in the surrounding area. Mining activity has ceased, but the old mining buildings are still visible within the area.
The Beach
The central beach of Gerakini stretches for 3 kilometers and is sandy with a shallow bottom. Unlike more "organized" beaches in Halkidiki, here the sunbed-tent situation is more relaxed — there are beach bars in certain spots, but large sections remain free and wild. Pine trees and tamarisks at the back provide natural shade.
It has a Blue Flag most years. Free parking is available at the ends of the beach.

- Mussels from nearby mussel farms
- Traditional cooked dishes: beef steak, bekri meze, kokoretsi
- Local olive oil from Polygyros and Halkidiki olives
Prices are affordable: 30-50 euros for a table for 2.
Accommodation

- Apartments for 4 people: 75-120 in normal, 110-170 in peak
