Paleochori is a mountainous village in central-northern Halkidiki, at an altitude of 520 meters, on the slopes of Mount Stratoniko. With around 600 permanent residents, it is one of the most authentic traditional villages in the region, with a strong "Greek" character and a remarkable history. Its name comes from the Byzantine "Palaio Chorion" — meaning old settlement, referring to its continuous habitation since ancient times.
Location and How to Get There
Located in central-northern Halkidiki, 25 km north of Polygyros. It is 95 kilometers (1 hour 35 minutes drive) from Thessaloniki. From Olympiada (coastal): 25 km to the south.
There are only 1-2 daily KTEL bus routes. A car is essential.
A Bit of History
Paleochori has been continuously inhabited since ancient times. In the Byzantine centuries, it was an important mining center, and during the Ottoman period, it was part of the Mandemochoria — the villages of Halkidiki that had a special tax regime due to the provision of ore (mainly silver) to the Ottoman administration. This privileged status allowed these villages to maintain the Greek language and Orthodox traditions to a high degree.
During the revolution of 1821, Paleochori was one of the first villages in Halkidiki to participate in the struggle. The village has several monuments dedicated to the fighters of that era.
