Saint Paul

Mount Athos, Athos Peninsula, Halkidiki

Saint Paul

The Monastery of Saint Paul is located on the **southern coast** of Mount Athos, near the slopes of Mount Athos — one of the monasteries closest to the summit. It was founded in the **10th century** and holds the **14th position** in the Hierarchy. It is named after Saint Paul the Xeropotaminos. The monastery is situated at a high elevation with a **unique view** to the south: on clear days, the islands of the Aegean Sea can be seen. The **icon of the Virgin Mary** is preserved here, which, according to tradition, hosted the Magi who ascended to Mount Athos after the Dormition. There are also significant golden liturgical vessels. The location makes Saint Paul’s a base for the **ascent to the summit of Athos** (2,033 m.) — the most popular hike for pilgrims. From the monastery to the summit: 3-4 hours of ascent. Access: boat from Dafni (1 hour) or on foot from Simonopetra (1.5-2 hours). It accommodates visitors — a good choice for those considering the ascent to the summit.
