Stavronikita

The Monastery of St. John the Theologian is the **smallest** of the 20 autonomous monasteries of Mount Athos — a small but completely autonomous monastery. It was founded or renovated in **1535 AD** and holds the **15th position** in the hierarchy. It is located on the **northeastern coast**, between Iviron and Pantokrator — visible during cruise routes from Ierissos. It is characterized by the impressive **defensive tower** that dominates the composition. The **icon of Saint Nicholas** is preserved with an embedded marine shell — according to tradition, it was found in the sea and was raised where the monastery was founded. There are also frescoes of the katholikon (16th century) by Theophanes the Cretan. The **great significance** of this small monastery lies in its frescoes: they are considered masterpieces of the Cretan painting school. Access: boat from Dafni (45 minutes) or on foot from Iviron (30-40 minutes). It accommodates a small number of visitors.
