Halkidiki is one of Greece's most convenient destinations for a holiday with a dog: you arrive by road, free beaches number in the dozens, and places with a yard abound. But it takes a little strategy — rules, heat and the organised beaches set limits. Here's the practical guide.
What applies on beaches
The general rule in Greece: pets are not banned from beaches unless a local prohibition exists — and in practice the organized beaches with sunbeds and lifeguards (especially Blue Flag beaches, whose criteria explicitly exclude pets from the bathing zone) are off the list. The dog must be leashed, you should carry its health booklet, and bags are non-negotiable.
The good news: Halkidiki has a huge stock of free, quiet shores where nobody will mind — see the guide to the quiet beaches.
The most dog-friendly picks
- Kakoudia (Ierissos): Kilometres of open sand with no facilities — running space by the square kilometre.
- Tristinika (the ends) and Salonikiou (Sithonia): Long sands whose far ends stay nearly empty.
- Elani (Kassandra) and Develiki (Ouranoupoli): Free, with easy parking by the shore.
- Early or late anywhere: Before 9:00 and after 19:00 even the more "central" free zones are practically yours.
Heat: the real danger
- Sand and asphalt burn 11:00-18:00 in July-August — the 5-second palm test before your dog walks.
- Never in the car, not even "two minutes" with a window open.
- Water everywhere: a folding bowl in the beach bag, umbrella shade — and mind the seawater (no drinking).
- Evening walks: Afytos' cobbles and the seafront promenades are ideal after sundown.
Stay and food
Many of the stays in our directory state explicitly whether pets are welcome — browse the available stays and always confirm by message before booking (dog size, outdoor space). At tavernas, courtyards and pedestrian-street tables will rarely refuse a calm, leashed dog — ask as you enter.
Practical
- Vets: In the main hubs — Nea Moudania, Polygyros, Nikiti, Kassandreia. Save a number before you leave.
- Dog first-aid: Up-to-date parasite protection (sandflies = leishmaniasis in the Mediterranean), gauze, thermometer.
- Ammouliani ferry: Pets travel on deck, leashed — the 10-minute crossing is easy even for anxious dogs.
Practical notes for international visitors
Many drive down with the dog via the Balkans — doable, but plan dog stops and check transit-country rules (Serbia and North Macedonia are outside the EU: EU pet passport, valid rabies jab, possible border formalities). On the ground an EU pet passport is all you need; the leash rule is loosely applied on free beaches as long as the dog is unobtrusive, but stay firmly off Blue Flag beaches. Take summer heat more seriously than at home — shade, not sand, between 11am and 6pm.
Frequently asked questions
Are dogs allowed on organized beaches?
As a rule, not in the sunbed zone — and definitely not on Blue Flag beaches. The answer is the free shores, which in Halkidiki are also the most beautiful.
Which area is best for a dog holiday?
Sithonia and the Athos coast: more free beaches, more space, fewer crowds. Eastern Kassandra (Hanioti-Pefkochori) is the toughest zone in August.
