Nea Fokaia is the first "real" village you meet entering Kassandra from the east — and one of the few that keep a fishing identity alongside the tourist one: a small harbour with caiques, tavernas on the water and, above them, the Byzantine tower of Saint Paul defining the skyline. Founded in 1922 by refugees from Phokaia in Asia Minor (hence the name), it has ~1,200 residents today.
The tower and the Agiasma
The tower of Saint Paul (1407) is the village landmark: a monastic watchtower on the harbour rock, among Halkidiki's best-preserved Byzantine monuments. Nearby, the Agiasma of Apostle Paul — a holy spring in a rock-cut tunnel, tied to the tradition of Paul's passage through the area. Every summer (26 June) the Agiasma festival is among Kassandra's biggest.
Beaches
The village beach stretches south of the harbour with sand and shallow water — convenient, family-friendly, with the tower in the frame. Within a short radius:
- Varkes (5.6 km): The cove below the bluffs of Afytos — golden sand, reached by steps.
- Afytos (6.2 km): The main beach below the stone-built village.
- Sani (~6 km west): Halkidiki's most "Caribbean" sand, on the opposite coast.
All options: beaches near Nea Fokaia.
Things to do
- Evening at the harbour: Ouzeries and fish tavernas with tables by the water — northern Kassandra's most atmospheric setting.
- Afytos (6 km): The peninsula's most beautiful village for an evening stroll — see the Afytos guide.
- Bike/walk: The coastal road towards Afytos strings together small sandy stops for swim breaks.
Food and stay
Fresh fish is the strong point — the harbour's caiques supply the tavernas next door. Stay options: rooms, studios and small hotels, at friendlier prices than Afytos. Browse stays in the area.
Practical
- Distance: ~75 km from Thessaloniki (1h 10m) — one of Kassandra's most accessible bases.
- Parking: Around the harbour and along the seafront — August evenings need a little patience.
- Best period: June-September; on 26 June the festival alone is worth the drive.
Practical notes for international visitors
Nea Fokaia is Kassandra's charming overture: a Byzantine tower over the fishing harbour, tavernas by the water — and, right at the start of the peninsula, only ~70 minutes from the airport. Prices sit below neighbouring Afytos (6 km), which you still reach in ten minutes for the evening. On 26 June the Agiasma festival transforms the place.
