Nea Fokea is a coastal village in northwestern Kassandra, between the Potidea Canal and Kallithea. With around 1,500 permanent residents, it maintains the identity of a fishing village — many locals are still involved in traditional fishing, and the small harbor is lively all year round. It is named after Phocaea in Asia Minor (a coastal city of Ionia, modern-day Foça in Turkey), the homeland of the refugees who settled here after 1922.
Location and How to Get There
In northwestern Kassandra, just 8 km south of the canal — that is, at the entrance of the peninsula. It is 80 kilometers from Thessaloniki (1 hour 10 minutes drive). From SKG airport: 75 km.
There are frequent bus services from Halkidiki — Nea Fokea is one of the easiest areas in Halkidiki to reach without a car.
A Bit of History
The modern Nea Fokea was founded in 1924 by Greek refugees from Phocaea in Asia Minor. These refugees were traditionally fishermen — and they brought this craft to their new homeland. The specialization in fishing is still maintained today.
Before the refugee settlement, the area was sparsely populated — Ottoman estates and a small agricultural settlement. The architecture of the first houses followed the Asia Minor tradition.
The Beach
The main beach of Nea Fokea is sandy with a shallow bottom, partially organized. It has a Blue Flag most years. Pine trees at the back in some spots. It has a more "local" character compared to the more touristy beaches of Kassandra — you see more families from Thessaloniki and fewer foreign tourists.

Food
Nea Fokea is one of the best areas for fish in northern Kassandra. Due to the vibrant fishing tradition and local boats bringing fresh fish daily to the harbor, the fish tavernas along the waterfront offer truly local servings. Specialties include:
- Fresh catch of the day: weighed in front of you
- Traditional Asia Minor recipes: different from regular Halkidiki dishes
- Baccalaureate: a specialty of some tavernas
- Salted sardines: traditional preparation
- Grilled octopus
- Mussels from nearby farms
Normal prices: 35-55 euros for a table for 2 with fish.
Accommodation
There are a few small and medium hotels, as well as several rental apartments and studios. Due to its proximity to Thessaloniki and its more "local" character, many Thessaloniki residents have holiday homes here — which are rented out during the periods when the owners are not using them.
- Studios for 2 people: 45-80 euros/night in June/September, 70-110 during peak
- Apartments for 4 people: 70-110 during normal, 110-160 during peak
