Kassandra has a reputation among seasoned Greece travellers: parties, beach bars, buzz. It's true — and still only a quarter of the story. Between the crowded hotspots hide beaches that hold their own against Sithonia: the shifting sand spit at Possidi, "Caribbean" Sani, the pine-backed shore of Kryopigi. We've organised the peninsula's best beaches by coast, with real distances and honest takes.
East coast (Toroneos Gulf): classic Kassandra
From Afytos to Pefkochori runs the best-known string of beaches — facilities, shallow water and villages that stay awake late.
- Afytos: The main beach below Kassandra's most beautiful stone-built village. Slightly north lies the cove of Varkes — golden sand beneath the bluffs, reached by steps.
- Kallithea: The peninsula's most complete infrastructure — sunbeds, water sports, disabled access — and the heart of the nightlife.
- Kryopigi: Two kilometres of sand with a pine forest reaching almost to the waterline. The greenest, quietest choice on the east coast — ideal for families.
- Polychrono: A long organized beach — plus a stop at Mavrobara lake, home to rare turtles, above the village.
- Hanioti: Wide sand, full facilities, lifeguard — and the liveliest seafront promenade for an evening stroll.
- Pefkochori and Golden Beach: Over 3 km of continuous sand with a shallow bottom — room for everyone, even on August 15th.
The southern tip: Paliouri and Agia Paraskevi
- Chrousou (Paliouri): The great bay of Paliouri — sand, pines and a slower pace than the Kallithea-Hanioti axis.
- Agia Paraskevi: Kassandra's thermal-springs corner — combine a sea swim with a spa with a view.
- Glarokavos: The small lagoon with moored boats south of Pefkochori — one of Kassandra's most distinctive scenes.
West coast: sunsets and a local rhythm
The west side faces the Thermaic Gulf and the sun sets over the sea — this is where Greek holidaymakers tend to go.
- Possidi: The cape with a sand spit that changes shape with the currents — swim in shallow, calm water on the inner side and watch one of Halkidiki's finest sunsets, lighthouse in the frame.
- Elani: A free stretch of sand between Siviri and Possidi — the quiet exception of the west coast.
- Siviri and Fourka: Family-friendly, shallow, with tavernas by the sand — Thessaloniki's classic picks.
- Nea Skioni: A fishing village with a long calm beach — one of the peninsula's most authentic corners.
The northern gateway: Sani, Nea Fokaia, Potidea
- Sani: Fine white sand, a 50+ metre shallow zone, lifeguard — Halkidiki's most "Caribbean" beach, with free access on the public side.
- Nea Fokaia: A traditional harbour with a Byzantine tower and a shallow, calm beach.
- Nea Potidea: Beside the canal that "cuts" the peninsula — shallow, lifeguarded, and the closest notable beach to Thessaloniki (60 km).
Which beach for whom

Practical notes for Kassandra's beaches
Distances: Kassandra is the peninsula closest to Thessaloniki — Nea Potidea 60 km (50m), Kallithea ~90 km (1h 20m), Paliouri ~115 km (1h 45m). Feasible even as a day trip.
Traffic: The peninsula's loop road gets heavy on July-August weekends, especially at the entrance (Potidea canal) heading in 9:00-11:00 and back towards Thessaloniki 17:00-20:00. Plan around it.
Facilities: Almost every major beach also has a free section — you are never obliged to pay for a sunbed. At the beach bars, a sunbed often comes with a minimal purchase.
When: June and September are the smart months here too. Kassandra's extra advantage: with the largest tourist infrastructure, more places stay open in September than on the other peninsulas.
Practical notes for international visitors
Kassandra is the most developed of Halkidiki's three peninsulas — which for international visitors means the smoothest infrastructure: English menus are the norm on the east coast, cards work almost everywhere, and the airport transfer is barely an hour.
Our advice: take the convenience, but still hire a car. The west coast (Possidi, Siviri, Nea Skioni) with its sunsets and fish tavernas sits only 15 minutes from the hotel zones and shows a Kassandra most package guests never see. Drive on the right; using the hard shoulder to let faster cars past is local courtesy, not a fault.
