Afytos: The Stone Jewel of Kassandra
Afytos (or Afitos) is one of the most picturesque villages in Halkidiki and certainly the most beautiful in Kassandra. Built on a rock overlooking the Thermaic Gulf, it stands out for its stone houses, cobbled streets, and authentic atmosphere.
Architecture and Stone Houses
Afytos is one of the few traditional settlements in Kassandra that has preserved its architectural heritage. The stone houses date mainly from the 19th century and have been restored with respect for tradition. Many of them now operate as guesthouses, restaurants, and shops. Walking through the alleys, you will feel as if you are traveling back in time.
The Square and the View
The central square of Afytos is located at the edge of the rock and offers one of the most impressive views in Halkidiki. From there, you can see the entire Thermaic Gulf, Mount Olympus on clear days, and the vast blue waters. The sunset from here is magical and constitutes a daily ritual for locals and visitors alike.
Aristotle and Ancient History
In the square, there is a replica of an ancient statue and quotes from Aristotle, reminding us of Halkidiki's deep connection with the great philosopher. In the area, there are ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Athena, which demonstrate the significance of the settlement in antiquity. Ancient Afytos is mentioned by Herodotus and Thucydides.
Taverns and Food
Afytos is famous for its taverns:
**Marina**: Classic fish tavern with a view of the sea. Fresh fish and seafood at excellent prices.
**Klimataria**: Traditional tavern in a stone building with a courtyard. Home-cooked meals, grilled meats, and local wine.
Besides the taverns, you will find modern cafes and bars that stay open late, especially along the rock.
The Kassandrin Festival
Every summer, Afytos hosts events as part of the Kassandrin Festival, featuring music, theatrical, and cultural performances. The events take place in the outdoor theater and at various points in the village, giving a special breath to the summer nights.
Beaches
Beneath the rock of Afytos lies a large sandy beach with clear waters. Access is via stairs or by road. The beach is partially organized and quite spacious even in August.
