Halkidiki is one of Greece's best "hidden" MTB landscapes: forest roads on Cholomontas, sea-view trails on Sithonia's Mount Itamos and coastal routes that end in a swim. The infrastructure isn't alpine — which is exactly why you'll have the trails almost to yourself.
Cholomontas: Halkidiki's "mountain"
The forest-road network around Arnaia, Taxiarhis and Varvara is ideal cross-country: beech and chestnut, 600-1,000 m altitudes, coolness even in July, and villages as water-and-food stations. The classic Arnaia-Taxiarhis-Varvara loops run 20-45 km depending on the variations.
Sithonia: the sea from above
The Itamos massif hides the peninsula's most spectacular forest roads — with Parthenonas as the finest trailhead: a forested climb, a ridgeline with double views (Toroneos one side, Singitic the other) and a descent to a swim. See also the Sithonia cycling route for a gentler, road-friendly version.
Kassandra and easy coastal spins
For mild family rides: Kassandra's inland "plain" loop through Kassandrino and Kalandra, and the dirt tracks behind the western beaches. Ammouliani is a special case — a small island, few cars, ideal for renting a bike on the spot.
Practical
- Season: April-June and September-October are the ideal window. At midsummer, dawn or evening only — and on Cholomontas, not the baking coast.
- Kit: Come self-sufficient — tubes, pump, multitool. Bike shops are few (mainly Moudania/Polygyros); e-bikes rent increasingly at the big resorts.
- Water: 2+ litres in summer; the mountain villages' fountains are your stations.
- Maps: The forest roads are well mapped in the usual outdoor apps — download offline maps before setting out.
Practical notes for international visitors
If you're used to alpine trail centres, reset expectations: Halkidiki offers no bike parks, but lonely forest roads and panorama gravel — and you'll still ride in a jersey in October when the season ends at home. Bike shops in Moudania and Polygyros cover tubes and standard parts, nothing exotic — bring your own for anything unusual. Water generously; the mountain-village fountains are the reliable taps.
Frequently asked questions
Is Halkidiki for technical MTB or for touring?
Mostly cross-country and gravel-style forest roads — not bike parks. Its charm is the combination: morning on the trails, noon in the sea.
Best first-time route?
Arnaia-Taxiarhis through the forest: gentle grades, shade, an easy return and lunch at Palaiochori as the reward. See also the hiking trails — several are rideable.
