Halkidiki is not just about beaches. It is ideally located within reach of some of the most important destinations in Northern Greece — archaeological treasures, Byzantine monuments, mountains, and waterfalls. If you are staying for a week or more, one or two day trips can add immense value to your vacation. Here are the best ones.

*From the center of Halkidiki (Polygyros). From Kassandra/Sithonia, add accordingly.
1. Thessaloniki — the easiest
Greece's second-largest city is just 1-1.5 hours away. White Tower, Rotunda, Upper Town, Archaeological Museum, shopping center on Tsimiski, New Paralia beach. Ideal for a city day amidst beach vacations — especially if you want shopping or culture.
2. Vergina — UNESCO World Heritage
The royal tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, is one of the most significant archaeological finds in Greece. The underground museum above the unlooted tombs is stunning. A must-visit for anyone interested in ancient Macedonia.
3. Olympus & Dion — mountain and gods
The mountain of the gods (2,918m) and the ancient sacred city of Dion at its foothills. The trails for climbing start in Litohoro. The archaeological park of Dion with its sanctuaries, theater, and mosaics deserves a whole day.
4. Edessa — the city of waters
The waterfalls of Edessa are the largest in the Balkans within the city. The water park, the caves behind the waterfall, and the traditional village of Varosi provide a cool alternative, especially on hot days.
5. Meteora — the most impressive (but distant)
The monasteries built on vertical rocks are UNESCO World Heritage and among the most breathtaking landscapes in Greece. The distance (3-3.5 hours) makes it a long day trip — start early (7:00) or consider an overnight stay in Kalambaka.
Practical tips for day trips
- Car: Almost essential. Organized trips are available from major tourist centers (Kallithea, Hanioti, Neos Marmaras) to Meteora, Vergina, Thessaloniki.
- Start early: Especially for Meteora — avoid the heat and crowds.
- Dress for monasteries: Meteora requires long clothing (skirt for women, long pants).
- Fuel & tolls: Account for tolls on the Egnatia Odos for Vergina/Edessa/Meteora.
- Combinations: Vergina + Edessa in one day (close to each other). Olympus + Dion as well.
Which one to choose?
If you have time for one trip: Vergina (if you love history) or Thessaloniki (if you want a city). If you have two: add Edessa or Olympus/Dion. Meteora is worth it but only if you are willing for a long day of driving — or consider an overnight stay.
