Mount Olympus is visible from Halkidiki's shores on clear days — and just two hours away: a trip that links the Macedonians' sanctuary at Dion, the Enipeas gorge at Litochoro and, for the bolder, a first taste of the mountain of the gods. One of the best-balanced days off the beach.
Dion
The Archaeological Park of Dion was the Macedonians' religious centre — Alexander sacrificed here before his campaign. The site is a park of water and greenery: sanctuaries, Roman villas with mosaics, a theatre, and the excellent museum in the village next door. Walkable even in heat — allow 2-2.5 hours with the museum.
Litochoro and the Enipeas
Litochoro, at the foot of the mountain, is Olympus' "capital": a square overlooking the gorge, tavernas and a mountaineering vibe. From the village's edge starts the Enipeas trail — walk as far as you like into the gorge with its natural pools and return the same way: even 1 hour delivers the feeling.
For the more mountain-minded
By car you can drive up to Prionia (~1,100 m) — the hikers' trailhead and a fine coffee stop beneath the peaks. Summiting Mytikas is a two-day affair with a refuge, not a Halkidiki day trip.

- Route: Nea Moudania → Dion ~175 km (2 hours) via the ring road and the Athens motorway.
- Order: Dion in the morning (before the heat) → lunch in Litochoro → Enipeas or Prionia in the afternoon.
- Shoes: Closed shoes for the Enipeas — the path has rock and roots.
- The return: Katerini's beach is en route if you fancy an "away" swim.
Practical notes for international visitors
For visitors from the Alps this is a charming inversion: instead of summit ambition, mythology you can walk into — the sanctuary at Dion and the Enipeas gorge are doable in trainers, with kids. Summiting Mytikas is a two-day hut trip, not a day out from the beach. Bring firm shoes for the gorge, and swim at Katerini's beaches on the way back.
